Hey guys, so for the last month and a half I've really been struggling with my internet. Basically during the day its incredibly slow, and my latency is above 800 sometimes its 2000- 2500 like it gets really ridiculous.

I was first with afrihost and they told me to do all these tests, what ive gathered is its not my computer because when i use it at someone elses house its fine, and if i use the wifi on my phone its still the same. Ive tried with a cable/no cable still the same. So then this mweb guy phoned me (i did a free trial with them) and he promised me if i moved to mweb he would help me fix my net issues (which he didnt). So i signed a new contract with them hoping it would help, so we did tests and they said its Congestion. Ive reported 2 faults with telkom and both times they said they dont see anything wrong with the internet in my area and that they think im being throttled... But the results are the same with 2 different isps.

The only thing i havent tried is a new router, but my router is about 9 months old? So i dont know if its that. Any suggestions would be great I would honestly really appreciate it (sorry for the long post). Also I live in Meyersdal area, South of Joburg.

Hey dude. Download WinMTR from http://sourceforge.net/projects/winmtr/ and run a couple traces to a few local IP's and a couple international ones and post your results here. WinMTR is basically like tracert on steroids. Running these tests will show from which hop your latency is coming from, and hopefully where the problem is.

Bottom line is MWEB lied to you when they said they'd fix your Telkom issues. They lied to you again when they convinced you to sign lengthy contracts with them.

Your issue, if congestion related, is a Telkom problem and not one an ISP can resolve. You were shafted by a lying salesman...

Make sure nothing else is connected to your router.

Turn off wifi and unplug any other LAN cables. Then do the line tests as above.

Its either congestion at the exchange or a problem on your line, post linestats here as well.

Yeah, could also be something simple like a bad pots filter, but as stated above, post line stats as in sync rate, downstream attenuation and SNR values.

The test I did now was with my ethernet cable plugged into my router with the wifi turned off. I first did it through the WiFi so i had to
redo the test again. I noticed that through the WiFi the numbers were higher.

Right now im on Mweb with 2mb line uncapped, but i had similar results with afrihost 2m uncapped aswell

I'm not sure if the test i did shows that, dont really know much about all of this :/

Your latency between your router and the LNS (41-133-74-1.dsl.mweb.co.za) aka the 2nd hop in the trace is quite bad. It's around 400ms on average between the two, but should only be around 10 - 30ms. It stays high down through all the hops, which does indicate a persistent issue, normally indicating exchange congestion. Post your line stats here as well as it could also be related to your line.

Your line is a picture of health. Low attenuation (short/low loss) and your sync rate is only 2meg, this makes your SNR very high, which is good. Unfortunately, it does look like you are on a congested exchange. You could try another router as a last resort as there's not much anything you can do about the exchange, except bug telkom about it.

Do you think that its worth it to try a different router though? So it doesnt matter what ISP i change to I'm basically stuck with this internet? :/ Also they cant put me on another exchange or anything like that right?

PM TelkomZA & enquire if it's possible to move to a different dslam/imax, it's worth a try.

Btw those mweb cnuts lied to you, how very professional of them...

are you interpreting snr as 18 and att as 11 ?
