So everyone seems to be shifting away from Samsung ... ?
 
Hey all. My uncle is looking for a new TV and as I'm moving soon I thought I would have a look for him and buy the same one. His only personal requirement is that it is 65" but he keeps going to stores and getting sold on the top of the range Samsung for prices hovering around R40k when his needs are exclusively HD DSTV and DVDs (yeah I know). So my question is two fold:
1) What is a good TV (panel quality most NB) for HD DSTV (mostly football watching)
2) Are any of the new buzz words worth getting excited over in SA? HDR10, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, 4K, High Frame Rate, etc? I know they're pointless for him but my TV will probably be connected to a PC (and no DSTV) but I can't foresee a point in the near future where I will be consuming any streaming media in 4K never mind HDR or HFR due to bandwidth and data cap restrictions and I'm also unlikely to drop the kind of money on a PC that would be able to game in 4K HDR at all never mind above 60fps.
 
65" look at the Hisense range can be had for as little as R12k

A normal 4k TV will do just fine, does he sit at an angle or dead center - we will determine what panel type he should get

He'll sit dead center but he does entertain a lot for sport matches. Do you get IPS panels in the 4k 65" range? I've seen OLED, QLED and VA in my cursory searches but the first two seem prohibitively expensive and the latter generally suffers from the poor angles you're referencing. Nothing I have seen has been obviously an IPS panel.

Yes you do, obviously depending on the budget.

Almost all LG's use IPS, I think they use VA on TV's bigger than 65". Then you get other brands like Panasonic, Skyworth and Sinotec that mostly use IPS panels made by LG as well

Also QLED is still a VA panel.

Thanks for the info, yeah you're right the LG panels are mostly IPS. For some reason I had banished all thought of LG from my mind because I knew I wasn't in the market for OLED (wish I was though).

So it comes down to this:
Medium tier Samsung VA panel UA65MU7000KXXA (viewing angle not great) ±R20k
Medium tier LG IPS panel 65SK7900 (black performance not great) ±R20k
High end Hisense (but same price as the above two) 65M7000UWG ±R20k
Or Medium/Low tier Hisense 65N3000UW ±R12k

Thoughts on these based on his needs and value for money?

That hisense can be had for less, friend picked his up for R16k
 
If I had to choose, I'd either go for :

Hisense 65M7030 (slightly newer version of the 7000) - its a VA panel, so keep that in mind. Also Not sure how reflective the screen is?

OR

LG 65SK7900. IPS Panel, so wide viewing, but not great blacks. Has a very good anti-reflective screen. WebOS is also really good.

For me screen reflections are insanely irritating :oops:

Haven't heard great things about the grey uniforming/blacklighting of the MU7000 range, so I'd avoid it.
 
Looking at 50"Smarts now. Considering one of these two,
Leaning toward the 5010UW as it has USB3.0 (so far the only TV i found with USB3.0 capability).

Tv is used mostly for Streaming and Gaming.

Any advice would be appreciated.

No idea, the one is basically the updated model of the other, the A6 series replaced the M and N series, though the A6100 would've been more equivalent to an N/M3000 which the A65 would be the 5000 or something so the M5030 would get my vote.
