My original budget that I was willing, able and happy to spend was actually 2.5k and I bumped that up to 3k. As I said I'm in no hurry to buy at the moment (was my bday this week bought a 10k laptop and ipod touch, will keep me busy for now :D) and why I was looking for something second hand. I don't even really watch normal TV (although we have DSTV) and this is primarily to replace watching on a laptop + sennheiser headphones

Especially in that case take the 2.5k put them aside and get something decent for 3.5k when you have the money and something is available... You likely will regret getting a budget TV, especially if you plan on hooking it up to your laptop.
 
Planning on buy a +-40" LED or LCD Full HD tv.

Preferably one with more than 1 HDMI and that is capable of playing movies from a USB External HDD (.mkv, .avi, .mp4)

Budget R4000 - R7000

Any recommendations?

For 7000 Makro had the Samsung LA46D550 about two weeks back

Cool. Then it's between Samsung LA46D550 and Samsung PS51D450 51" plasma (or D490 3D plasma).

Highly recommend testing at a proper AV shop with dark room.

Not everyone wants to live/watch in a cave.

ronald911 rather check in conditions that will best match your viewing environment & times-of-day, taking into account brightness & relfections.

You misunderstand. AV-testing dark rooms will obviously have some lighting to match ambient lighting conditions at home. Far better than testing at Game/Makro, which I'm sure as hell you'd never advocate.
 
Decided to look for a 26" (saw my girlfriends, my TV is right by feet of bed so big enough). Postman, saw a second hand Hisense LCD26v87 26" for R1700 6 months old. Good or bad deal?

Tsk, as you wish. :)

Tbh not too sure. I can get the 26V67 for around R2,400 new, which is FHD.

The 26V87 seems to have better specs otherwise, apart from its lower HD Ready resolution which may be a factor.

Why would you assume store conditions would always be so foreign from home viewing. Perfect example, was watching the RWC games this morning with patio doors to pool area wide open and plenty of bight light streaming in. Not too different from well ligthen store.
 
I don't assume that, as there is a big difference between the scenario you explain and the one in store. Which I'm sure you understand.

If you're just saying there are variables besides in-store and in-ambiently-lit dark rooms, then I absolutely agree.

Further I think most buying HDTV's fit the 9-5 demographic, generally speaking.

I don't, sorry. Heard their support is quite good.

I'm bordering on suspecting no, or possibly that it plays smaller avi's, divx's, etc. abut not mkv's etc.
 
Has anyone checked out the brand new 3D LG TVs?

I like the idea of cheap 3D glasses (like you get at cinema), will save lots of cash....but will it be as good as the 3D Samsung LED TVs?
