@Roman: This must mean that the LAxxC530 has better motion handling than the LAxxD550 ???

I don't go around calling the site bias though due to them mentioning one bad thing. They also only seem to be bias against your plasma and the PN43

Of course not. What they are mentioning, and are quite correct about, which you too mentioned, is the downfall of entry 50Hz LCD.

Yes, they were biased against my plasma. They rated 5 Series LCD above it for black levels IIRC. Hogwash, I have both to compare in my own house with my own eyes. Many forumites have also pointed out this incorrect information from televisioninfo.

Google it as well, there are even threads on AVForum about them.

which is weird, the other plasmas they rate quite well, you know the higher up ones.

Weird I just checked three plasma's where they mention the deep blacks and surprisingly how good they were... Bias oh my it's all bias they only praise LCD's lordy lord it's bias...

Lol, I should have made myself clearer. Biased against some plasmas. Did not mean all.

How so, they're just reporting the measurements taken from their DisplayMate calibration equipment. Wheres the bias?

According to their measurements; PN51D450 (0.03 cd/m2) > LN46D550 (0.06 cd/m2) > PN42C450 (0.13 cd/m2).

This indicates the low-end Plasmas in no way have vastly superior black levels to the 5 series LCDs as you continually profess.

They were when I researched for my own TV last year.

They still are when in a dark room, plasma's black level superiority is easily noticeable, even though on paper it is a small difference.

Thrilled with my LAxxC550 black levels. S-PVA for the win.

I would imagine black level difference is a lot more noticeable than white level/brightness difference.

The fact though is that they are better.

Perhaps you could teach Lupus a thing or two, as he disagrees with you ?

My scenario being similar to yours and after reading these posts, I was looking to purchase the Samsung PS43D450, as viewing distance would be 2/3 metres. Currently have a 74cm CRT and will be purchasing my first flat panel. Went to a few stores but now cannot decide between the PS43D450 and the PS51D450. Will it be worth spending to extra R1000 on the 51" or will it be too big for the area that I will be installing it in.

While the 43" may be more than adequate, 51" definitely won't be too big if you have around 3m to play with. Thing is, once you're used to whatever size you have, you'll always want bigger. :p I'd say max your budget if you can afford 51".

Here is my 42" from about 2m, perhaps it gives you an idea.



Personally I feel 50" at 2m would be a bit big.

Funnily enough, if you take those resolution/distance charts into account, they say that for the full FHD experience one must sit around 2m from a 50". Bit awkward, IMO.

Another thing you might want to consider is the technical aspect of both TVs. If you value SD content like 95% of DSTV, then you might prefer the 43" (update of my 42") as it has the best SD handling of all TVs I've seen due to its HD Ready 1024x768 (720p) resolution (with rectangle pixels for 16:9 wide screen). HD Ready 51" plasma is native 16:9 (1366x768, also 720p).

Here is another pic from about 2m, purely because in the panoramic the TV looks squashed which might lead people to believe it is squarer than other HDTVs due to its 4:3 physical resolution :D:



IMO 42/43" still offers best bang for buck due to its price as well as its handling of all sources, from SD to FHD.

My argument to you, is that HD Ready does it too, at a bigger size and cheaper. And better coming from entry plasma than entry LCD. And bigger for a cheaper price.

OK, so take for example a movie at 720p res (1280x720); will that look worse for wear being scaled down to 1024x768 which is the res of the PS43D450?

I guess it will still look much better than a 624 x 352 movie played on it?

Depends on your viewing distance, because the closer one is the more likely they are to notice lower resolution.

When I sit 1m from my 32" FHD Series 5 LCD, I notice pixelation in 720p average rip quality mkv. When I am 1.5-2m away, I cannot see these imperfections any more.

You said your viewing distance was ±2.5m IIRC? Then you won't notice the difference. Look at the expert distance-resolution chart, it explains a lot.

What you will notice, is superior picture quality (nothing to do with resolution/definition). From distance, better blacks and colours and motion handling (that entry plasma mostly has over entry LCD, especially Series 5 LCD vs Series 4 plasma) remain noticeable, while resolution/definition doesn't.

Remember: It is your intended usage that suits plasma. It is as simple as that.

If you can afford the 51", then DO IT. I have a 50", and sit roughly 4m away, and i want bigger. It will freak you out the first week or so, due to it's size, but man it's worth it. I would suggest keeping roughly 3m from a 50", otherwise you get lost in the screen. Flippin awesome.
 
Definitely if you can afford the 51" go for it, they improved the black levels and colour gamut on it, this one will indeed have a superior picture quality to the Series 5 LCD, not to sure about the 43" though as it might've inherited a few issues from the previous model, I also saw it in Game recently and even under the shop lights it did knock the socks off a few of the other TVs and it's huge.

That's what I'm concerned about, is that it might be too big for the area and you get lost in it. The kids will be playing their games on it as well. I'm tempted to cutout cardboards the size of the 43" and 51" and place it down on the cabinet to see how big it will be. We sit mostly about 2m away, maybe 2.5 and am concerned that that size will be too big. I don't want the effect of sitting in the front row of the cinema.:p
 
I have a 51" and I sit about 2.5-3m away. Not too big. Even in Mexico 51" is not too big. I want beeeeeger.
 
Well then I guess it's off to Canal Walk tomorrow and see where i can get the best price. None of the big stores have any Samsung specials at the moment but the Samsung Store actually had the best prices. Unless anyone here know of any other shops I can look at that might have some good pricing on the PS51D450.:o

Check out House and home also at canal walk, they have nice specials at times.
 
There is no such thing as too big a TV.

I have a projector on a 92" screen sitting 2.5-3.0 metres away and it is not too big.
