I would suggest Tafelberg Furnishers in Bellville (opposite Vodacom Techno Centre), or there's one in Green Point (opposite Traffic Centre) as well.

Compared prices between Game > Makro > Audiovision and Tafelberg Furnishers always beat them all.

*My best laugh was when I bought a Yamaha Receiver from them. Audiovision told me they cannot go one cent lower and when I showed Tafelberg Furnishers the quote, they knocked off another R1100. :)

You said your viewing distance was ±2.5m IIRC? Then you won't notice the difference. Look at the expert distance-resolution chart, it explains a lot.

What you will notice, is superior picture quality (nothing to do with resolution/definition). From distance, better blacks and colours and motion handling (that entry plasma mostly has over entry LCD, especially Series 5 LCD vs Series 4 plasma) remain noticeable, while resolution/definition doesn't.

Remember: It is your intended usage that suits plasma. It is as simple as that.



Well, if you're sitting 5m+ back, 624x352 will look great...

So... R4999 is a good price for the PS43D450? Why are most of the "specials" on LCD and LED? :(

From what I've seen, those are your 50Hz entry level panels. Even the saleperson at the Samsung Store advised against it. You can see how blurry fast motion images become on these units. And i'm talking as a noob here.

unless that samsung store is the cheapest they can dream about getting a sale from me. went there the other day, and for the fun of it... actually cause the salesman was following me around, ask him the difference between a D550 and a 4 series. lol he tells me the frame looks a bit better but thats it!

Sony pulled out of plasma production years ago.

And after seeing 4 or 5 xxCX520 units I don't think CX520 is too good at all. If you need entry LCD, because of its resolution (only selling point), then Samsung Series 5 is the way.

actually the resolution isnt the buying point for me. i like the features... amongst others

lan connectivity
skype
youtube
fm radio
use ipad as remote via wifi

planning to hook up the lcd to the hp microserver

im used to 54 cm crt tv with snow... no dstv even so i guess. even hd ready would have been fine, for watching tv. using the tv as a pc monitor, full hd is needed.

Amazing price. 11" bigger and better PQ than the same-priced LA40D550.

R2,000 cheaper and better PQ than the LA46D550.

Definitely if you can afford the 51" go for it, they improved the black levels and colour gamut on it, this one will indeed have a superior picture quality to the Series 5 LCD, not to sure about the 43" though as it might've inherited a few issues from the previous model, I also saw it in Game recently and even under the shop lights it did knock the socks off a few of the other TVs and it's huge.

All I can say is fracking WOW!!. Got my Samsung 51" plasma today and it's bloody amazing. Not sure about the size though, will have to get used to this massive size. Coming from a 74cm crt this thing is gigantic. When I looked at the 43" next to the 51" at the store this morning, it looked quite small but setting it up home it just looks massive. The kids are over the moon as their Xbox games look totally amazing. Also been looking through some movies that I had watched previously and it just looks so much nicer, even the doccies look more interesting.
So yeh, thank-you everyone for their input. Postmanpot, thank-you for all your valuable input, it was really appreciated.
Seems I picked the right day to get my panel as the weather seems very crappy outside, so really don't mind staying home this evening.
So whether you go plasma, lcd or led, it comes down to personal preference and you must be happy with your decision, after all it's your user-earned money you're spending.

So in cape town, where's a good place to check this tv out? One of the tv stores in Canal Walk probably gonna be easiest for me, unless there is somewhere in the CBD. Price at Game is R5699. Other places are closed now so i can't check their price today.

edit: If this tv is 1024x768 res, does that mean it's a 4:3 ratio? What's up with that?

Somewhere that has a viewing room that isn't lit by tons of shop lights where you can compare TVs especially from your home viewing distance.

Have explained res to you before, as well as in recent posts in this thread - so scroll up a bit. Rectangular pixels for 16:9 HDTV widescreen aspect ratio.

AFAIK they do beat online prices...
