LCD and Plasma Bargains

Thx PP, searched and found ur posts on rectangular pixels. Definitely went over my head if i read them before. Will phone around to find a place that has the tv setup in a decent environment. Audio vision price on the PS43D450 is R5399. Will get best price from Game once I know i will be happy with this TV.

AV should have a test room and I'm sure they'll match Game's price. If they can demo properly for you they deserve the sale. :)

Don't think they will accept online prices as they want to speak to a salesman from the competing retailer to confirm pricing. At least that's what happened to me.

Samsung store have the tv setup but not in a darkened room. I will try and see it there first. Will call Tafelberg tomorrow as well...

Yeah that as well. The salesman pretended to be a customer and enquired about the price and stock availability. But they actually honoured their agreement regarding beating any quoted price, as long as they can confirm it. He was a bit shocked though when I showed him my quote.
 
PnP had the PS43D450 and LA40D530 (model according to them...) for R4999.
I got the PS51D450 for R6499 - bought it from them because I had PnP vouchers which made it really cheap (<R5K), and because at that price you cannot get a similar sized model.

Comparing screens in-store is really difficult, LCD and Plasma both have advantages, and the marketing ploys or ignorance of those who setup the screens make it harder to choose. For example - 4 LED tvs were playing supersport HD - the AIM tv had by far the best picture! Turns out this was the only model with an hdmi source...

When comparing, the full hd lcds have a noticably sharper picture than the hd ready plasmas (fully understandable when playing 1080p), but even from a reasonable distance (>2.5m).
The blacks on the Series 5 lcds seem blacker than the plasmas as well, however, move even slightly off center, and the lcd blacks become a grey, while the richness of the plasma, and black levels are constant.

The reflectiveness of the screen is only really noticable in bright direct light, and when the unit is off, yet not too much off a distraction - my tv has sunlight directly on it.
During evening or dimmer conditions this issue is a non-issue.

The shop settings and signal source in-store turned my wife off the model I chose, but after some tweaking - colours, blacks, sharpness, noise etc. the picture is Great. Smooth motion, natural colours at any angle with good contrast. BBC Planet Earth is jaw dropping at this size.

It's not a perfect tv, but what is, at a budget price? Each perceived improvement adds R1000 or more to the price.

Yup there is an issue with the Series 5 LCD and viewing angles, not sure what Samsung were thinking but have had it where it is actually worse then my old Sinotec, but when you looking at it at the correct angles wow it's mind boggling of how different it is to my old TV.

Agreed. Picture quality especially on newer lcds have improved a lot (viewed head-on the picture has amazing depth) - to the extent that even with sd signals, plasmas advantage is not as pronounced anymore - specifically in the budget range.

On an unrelated note, I checked out LG's passive 3D LED tv and just from the demo being played, it was really really good.
I'm not a big fan of home 3D - the Samsung and Sony technology with active glasses seem too clinical and I can't watch it too long, but LG's offering was much more pleasant and still very convincing. They use cheap glasses also which are very light to wear.

There is no way to ascertain whether it is a good deal or not if you don't tell us what you intend using the TV for.

But it's LED back-lit LCD, so probably not a good deal from the start, seeing as it's generally inferior to CCFL-backlit LCD which costs less.

I feel many will succumb to the make-believe-LED marketing gimmick. :(

Cool, I just saw it and posted here to see what you say. Not planning on buying anything. Still using my 51 cm old school National with no remote. True story. :sick:
