lol don't get me wrong, I am also in the market for a Plasma, either the 42 or 50, still can't decide.

But I want better quality SD TV and Sport, sounds like MikyMouse might just be better off with LCD, but maybe not, depends if he wants to use PC.

Nah don't listen that re gas rubbish, I think it is a load of tripe and maybe was something you did with OLD plasmas.

I think the newer plasmas life span is similar to that of a LCD.

Samsung plasmas are rated at 200,000 hours before half life - that's over 30 years of 8 hours a day viewing. Should be enough for you I'd say.

There are many myths about plasma from the past that unfortunately still get passed on today as fact by ignorant people and salesmen alike.

Severe image retention after a few minutes displaying a static image

...All total bs these days. ;)

Apart from the better value for money in terms of size, you're also getting a day/night noticeable difference when watching SD content and sport, compared to LCD.

If movies/series are your priority, plasma is your match.

Don't worry about the HD/FHD. Even FHD Blu-ray rips look out of this world on my PS42C450. I honestly would have no need for anything better. If you are really worried about it, the shop should be able to demo HD vs FHD. But you can honestly take my word for it.

It sounds like the TV for me but what about only having 2HDMI inputs?? Can you get an adapter to expand this or do you continually have to plug and unplug things that you aren't using??

How is a 50" screen for viewing from about 3m??

Work out the size of the screen you are likely to get, measure your viewing distance. If it falls above the green line there is no point in getting FHD unless it's for pc.

I was briefly concerned about the 2 HDMI inputs. You do get HDMI switches with more ports then you just turn it to the one you want. However if you're going to get a proper full on HDMI receiver in the future then you only really need 1 port on the TV as everything will be hooked up to the receiver.

If it's an issue you should look at the PS50C450 model - has an extra HDMI port.

Better yet, try this:

With the massive saving you will be getting on a bigger, better image quality plasma, put your money towards the Sony STR500 which is sometimes on special for R3999.

The sound is absolutely mind-blowing for the price you pay.

Why I recommend it is that the AV receiver/amp has HDMI. This means you simply connect your HDMI devices to the AV receiver and then run them all to the TV via 1 HDMI cable. Since this is a cheaper HDMI AV receiver, it does not do audio over HDMI. You will need to run optical/SPDIF cables to the receiver for your audio.

50" for 3m sounds perfect to me! Check it out in the store. My PS42C450 is still huge ane I sit a little more than 3m away. You could potentially save even more money, and get the STR500. ;)
 
I sit about 4m away from my 42". Wouldn't say it's huge but it's certainly decent...

Ok so you have me sold... the only question now is the C430 vs the C450 how does the price differ and is there anything else different??? because I can always get an HDMI switch or a full HDMI receiver as roz0r says

Might be up to R1000 more. My PS42C450 was R500ish more than the C430 at the time. I think the C450 has a FM receiver and different housing, with Samsung's "Rose Touch of Colour".

Both panels are the same, so picture quality is the same.

Either way, both look great be it C430 or C450. And the STR500 will do the FM radio if it's ever needed.

Sounds fantastic!

I just checked the price on Price Check and the difference is R500 so might as well get the extra HDMI and FM receiver

Won't be able to get the STR500 just yet as I only got my Samsung C550 last year!

If for whatever reason I wanted to get a 42" Plasma what would be the best?

Sell C550, put it together with the savings from the C430 and get the STR500. :twisted: :D

Best is the PS42C430/PS42C450.

I am a PC gamer, and have only ever consoled on LCDs (for obvious reasons :D). All I can say is that everyone on these forums who has gamed on a plasma loves it and says it's better than on LCD.

Obviously not saying LCD won't be better or that it is not great, but from a price point, I'm quite confident plasma will win in terms of quality.

That said, there have been relatively few people commenting on plasma gaming (because most hardcore gamers are worried about image burn-in, as I alluded to above).

From a logical point of view it would make sense that plasma would be better - especially because of the size, faster response time and wide viewing angle - as well as due to better blacks and colours at the same price point.

Image burn-in will be in the back of your mind if you play games for many hours with HUDs and few cut scenes/cinematics (which would otherwise "refresh" the plasma cells displaying the static HUD). After the plasma break-in phase, your chances these days of image burn-in are very low, especially if you use a lower light/brightness setting.

As you may have read, I've had the past three cricket test matches on for 10+ hours a day for 15 days, and the screen had a green/yellow opaque "info bar" running across the entire button horizontal of the screen. I had no image retention. ;)
