This allows the card to be used in the PC card slots of 15" and 17" PowerBooks.

MACbook and VM PC Card

Hi,

Help!

I know my VM PC card is not compatible with a macBook from a hardware perspective but is there a PC Card to USB adapter option available anywhere that will enable connectivity.

TIA

Elan Digital Systems does manufacture a PCMCIA to USB adaptor that works with specific HSDPA cards. Have a look on their web site. They do have a local distributor as well.

3G Router

Is the Vodacom 3G Router able to:
Provide a wifi connection for a PS3
Provide an internet connection for a MacBook (wirelessly)
and connect a PC using an Ethernet cable?

You should probably have posted this in the Vodacom forum.. not the Linux subforum.. ;)

Don't actually know - I do not have one.. I know it has wifi and 4 regular LAN connections so most likely the answer to all three questions is yes.

Has there been an update on the Mac software, because the current software looks like it was designed by someone in 15 minutes whose primary objective was getting something to work, not making software that was intuitive.
To explain: if you want to connect you have to connect the card, wait till it is recognised by the system (else the software quits straight away).
You then have to click "Activate" in the software and enter your user security password.
Then the software quits so you can't monitor your usage and then you have to click "Connect" in the systems Internet Connection menu.
So two clicks and a password for something that should have only have taken 1 click.

If by password you mean your data SIM card's PIN number then why not disable the PIN number by putting the SIM card into an ordinary phone and disable via the phone's security or whatever menu, then put the SIM card back into your modem?

No there is an option in the software for remembering the pin code, the password I am referring to is the Mac's system password which you have to enter when you install new software or do system updates to ensure that the whole thing remains secure.

Except that with the Vodafone card it treats each new activation like a new piece of software being installed.

This probably wouldn't happen if I was using a desktop because it would be plugged in all the time and the machine wouldn't be turned off (just put to sleep) and then you wouldn't have to activate it each time. But considering that I use a notebook it is very frustrating.

Ok, ic what you mean - that does sound ittitating.

I think we really need a new dedicated Mac thread - one divorced from the Vista thread(s), @v3g what do you think?

Maybe a separate heading under the Linux one?

I agree the double click is an irritation.

Need to figure out how to do the free services thing.

Thanks v3g. I sorted it out with a reinstall of OSX.

OK now my last niggle is this. So far when I suspend or reboot, I have to fire up VMC and type in my pin! I dont ever want to deal with VMC or PINS etc. Just want to click the icon in the top. Can this be done.

Nevermind figured it out. According to the Novatel site, its merely a matter of disabling the PIN on the card. Just pop it into your phone disable it then back into the modem. Sorted!

BTW, do you get the same problem that pope24 posted about a few posts back in this thread?

Doh! Maybe I should have read up, you posted the solution as well.

Wierd I don't get that. Try setting up a new user account with Admin privileges. It may actually need admin rights. Probably some Mac security setting. I reinstalled and now everything is 100%, I just click an icon and I'm connected. Perfect for meetings away from the office.

Going to see if there is a script out there to auto-connect if no wifi is found.

Where would I need to look in order to find the right settings to use my Blackberry as an external modem? I found a modem script for the 8100 so thats done but putting my fingers on the right settings is proving to be hazardous to my mental health.

In particular I am looking for the following
Service Provider (optional)
Account Name
Password
Tel No

I'm assuming I need to leave the username and password blank?

Username and password is blank yes ...

There are two ways of using the scripts:
1. The phone number is actually *99# with the APN coded into the script
2. The phone number is the APN name, *99# coded into the script

I use #2, as that gives me the option to quickly be able to switch between internet and internetvpn APNs.

so I need to dig into the modem script?
