Makro Sinotec Full HD Special

That's not a bad price - i'd recon i'd of gone for the 40" Sony as well!

when I bought my LCD though, the price difference in FullHD sets between Sinotec and Sony were substantial to say the least....

Still is substantial, R12k vs R8.5k, 1 year warranty vs 5 year warranty... mmmm.. I'm not still not convinced the premium is justified...

Gees for an extra R3k could have got 50inch Samsung plasma and for the same price a 47inch FullHD Sinotec LCD...

It isn't - I spent days, nay weeks agonising over the decision. I scoured the 'web for every bit of information I could, and in the end I couldn't see the need to spend 30%+ more for a 'brand name'. In fact, I ended up with the Sinotec because my 32" LG started giving up the ghost 9 months after purchase, and Makro offered me a full refund (store credit).

There are some areas where premiums are justified, like say with Oakley shades as opposed to just about any other brand, but for the most part the sphere of LCD televisions isn't one of them.
 
It's all relative - if money was no object, then probably no. However, most people are a long way away from being in that position...

My situation, briefly, was this... either a new Sony LCD, OR a new Sinotec LCD and a Sony home theater receiver - easy equation.

If the sets were the same price I would probably go for the Sony but if I had R12k to spend on a set it would have to be the 47inch Sinotec....

Fair enough... I would love to see the 2 sets up against each other, the same environment, settings, connections etc etc I see the Sony's contrast ration is 33000:1 vs 2000:1, smack but in the real world it may be immaterial...

Alf you mentioned the Sinotec looked cheap alongside the Sony but what about the picture quality? Was there a definitive difference there too?

Interesting.

I spent about one hour in Game Menlyn looking at all the different sets.
To be honest, the set-up sucks and there is only one place where you can really compare screens(the sinotec was not part of those screens). All the other screens are either too low or two high to compare images.

But the one space where they have LG, Samsung, Sony in a pretty good arrangement. I stood there for almost 25 minutes viewing the National Geographic HD content they were playing on all sets(about 8). I could honestly not spot one difference between quality. All the blacks were the same, all the colors were the same, none had poor quality. Even with a Samsung series 4 and 5 next to each other I could not spot any differences. There was also a plasma between them. No visible difference.
It was like they were all set up exactly the same.

I am seriously confused now. Maybe with the new Samsung LED TV's the prices will drop even more in the next 2 months or so. I am either going to play the waiting game or if the shopping bug bites me during the weekend I am going to get the 42" Sinotec at Game.

Already spoke to the manager and he said they will beat Makro's price. Looking at about R8200.

+1. Also currently stuck with a 74cm Tedelex. On the Plasma/LCD's the tearing bothers me.

And I will be viewing only SD content for a while still.

My problem is that I only view SD DSTV on the screen and some DVD's once in a while. Other than that I dont play console games or hook up my laptops to the screen.

Think it will be a waste for me at this stage. But I will continue my research and always look out for good deals.
 
A guy I know at work switched on his Samsung 32 on Wednesday, and it now shows green fuzzy lines all over the screen with a darker green line in the middle, cant display an image.
Out of warranty - they want over a R1000 to fix, he is going to shop around of course for the best price to have it fixed.
17 months old.
Guess what Samsung have to say - nothing, we have taken your money thank you :(

SD content on my 42" looks fine - it might be my imagination, but I'm pretty sure it actually improved over the course of the first 2 months or so. There are 2 or 3 channels on DSTv that don't look great, but they're the compressed-beyond-recognition carp that I never watch anyway...

I can confidently say that the Sinotec handles SD much, much better than the 32" LG I had before - my wife was actually mad at me for having spent the money to replace our then-current CRT & it looked so much worse...

It seems that it takes a huge amount of fiddling with all the intricate settings on a modern TV to get a decent picture, though. I've got all the picture 'enhancing' doodahs switched off, and colour/contrast tweaked manually and I'm quite happy with the end result.

mmm... My Sinotec was purchased to replace a 11 year old Samsung 74cm and I agree, the picture on it was better than what I've got now...
 
Also keep it away from any magets or magnetic devices. That can screw up the TV. I don't know if this has the same effect on LCDs and plasma units though. It used to have that effect on CRTs, whereby it totally messes up the colour.
 
SO to gve a quick overview, My kids have 2 of the 32" in their "Games" Room, one connected to a PS3 and another connected to an XBox360, I have had them for at least 12 months now, and while they do struggle in certain light conditions I have no doubt that I would buy a bigger one if i needed to replace any of my other screen's ...

:p You think that's bad? Check this out. My grandfather won a TV from some place, but then something weird started happening. Everytime he switched it on, the colours were all messed up. He returned the TV and got a new one. Same thing. That one was also messed up in terms of its colour. Then he returned that one and got a new one. By now, everyone was thinking WTF? Then the guy asked him what could be causing this? He asked my grandfather if he has a magnet nearby. Grandfather went home and realised he had a moerse subwoofer sitting under the TV :D The magnet in there was obviously so huge that it was causing the TV to go berserk everytime he put it there. Silly old man :p
