Manual vs Automatic

after having my first automatic I will never go back.

manual was “fun” I suppose, but I just prefer high acceleration comfort.

not sure what an automatic is like in a “weak” car is, but in a 220+kw car it is great

Hire a bottom feeder automatic IF you really want to find out! You quickly get a feeling that you will be better off walking.

Correct. I was having a page thru & came across it.
Will have to go to the local barbershop to see if he has a copy that I can huh "redeploy"

Found an online archive from April 2018 Carmag that is similar but not that article you posted. Sort of regretting taking all my copies to Hospice bookshop the other day.

I took my 1982 VW Golf GLS out for a drive to the Hartebeespoort area yesterday to meet some biker friends for lunch and driving it reminded me of one reason why 'new' drivers on our roads are so terrible. There are power assisted brakes which are rubbish compared to modern brakes anyway, there is nothing else assisted or automatic, so you have to pay attention pretty much 110% of the time.

But that is part of the fun driving ......

Nah... New drivers are so terrible because they're incompetent in general, it has nothing to do with the car they are driving. I get nearly wiped out by as many POS old cars as newer cars. ...

My first car was a 1989 toyota corolla 1.6gl auto, had it only for a few months. Swore to never buy an automatic car again. I hated the gearbox in that thing. Slow, unresponsive and loved hunting. Didn't drive auto until 4 years ago when I test drove the passat DSG, first time I ever that I actually like auto again. Imperceptible gear changes, I loved it it. One test drive and I bought it.

Do you remember what box was in that Corolla?

I think the issue was the power and torque produced by the engine was way too low to cope with the torque converter losses. (53kW? just over 100nm?) I suspect that the torque was much lower than 100 nm.

It was a 3 or a 4 speed torque converter. Can't remember. It was the '89 to (I think) '93 model. The model before the rsi shape.

Drove a similar one for a few months many many donkey's years ago.. and yes it was a pig.

Older model? Still plenty of torque available. and at low revs.

Ja so you are caught. Stick to the general Left lane speed or join the lunatics ( especially the guys in their BMWs with double the torque) and try to stick at the 120 kph going speed.
Tough choice.
At the very heart of this entire debate, the entitled believing it is their right to disobey the law and those that want to enjoy the drive. I suppose, there are some who feel so intimated that they end up crawling up the pass in the yellow lane as well.
.
My god, but you do chop and change. Originally, the BMW drivers couldn't overtake your pre-historic sardine can. Now they lunatics with double the torque.

Again, how many of these have you driven to get the feeling you would rather walk?
