Manual vs Automatic

Not if driven by a moron who should not be allowed to own a wheel barrow! Then it is just a damn menace on the roads! People buy cars for the status NOT because they need them or know what the hell to do with it!

The fact that you can't see what my point is about is precisely the issue! It has very little to do with the vehicles themselves, BUT all about those who own automatics and top of the range cars who have no damn clue about how to drive them properly!

The fact that I in my little 1600 Corsa can out-accelerate them and reach the speed limit before they have even reach second gear IS the indictment.
Ahhh Geoff rolls in again...

Geoff, if you in your little corsa are out accelerating a top of the range bmw automagic, the driver more than likely doesn't care to race you while you are obviously spanking the pants off your little skedonk.

I specified an auto on my insurance. Don’t want to cause an accident whilst driving the insurance replacement car :)

Reminds me of the boys I encounter at traffic lights. They feel so good when they beat me to the next traffic light except they are the only ones racing.

I would love to see you out accelerate my wife when she's driving my little 2 litre diesel dsg. You do know that with an auto it's much less dependent on the driver than with a manual car? I really think you are just trolling us and trying to rile us up on this subject. No way can you be serious.

Oh all the time...

I trundle along in my car minding my own business and there is always some hero in a 19voetsak golof/polo or some other contraption with a big exhaust that is absolutely ringing its neck trying to pass me or beating me from traffic light to traffic light

Nah, he probably is serious. He doesn't quite grasp what a modern automagic is all about, or how one drives a decent vehicle. I can spank the absolute pants off my 2l diesel auto and it would leave his 1600 corsa totally standing in the dust, but I bought the car to be a comfortable daily driver, not a racer so why the hell would I try spank the thing all the time.. Hell it very rarely even gets put into Sport mode which would embarrass him even more.

I like automatics of today, however the maintance quality is in question.

I remember years ago a 4 Cyl automatic came out some bought it, utter rubbish it was, its best trip always was the 1st one from showroom floor to your house, after that tears.

That depends on the automatic used, twin clutches are expensive to repair and replace clutch packs, torque converter boxes are generally bomb proof if you service them at regular intervals while I won't touch a CVT automatic.

In this context though, the CVT is far better in terms of maintenance, as in it will probably outlast any other from of auto clutch.

(also, with rising fuel costs, a CVT is probably going to be more fuel efficient.)

(also, also, I love CVT's)

Why do you say it will outlast any other auto clutch? From what I recall they still have at least a torque converter and some have a locking 'clutch' for cruising to minimise torque converter losses. They don't have a gear set but run a belt or chain that I presume must be replaced at some stage. You are correct in that they are more fuel efficient, I have just never enjoyed driving them but that is personal and I should maybe give them a try again.

My bad, I see with proper maintenance the dct style should last as long as a CVT, but that maintenance will cost more.

Is a good comparison for whoever started this thread?

The automatic isn't the problem it's very easy for any idiot to simply floor the accelerator and the gearbox will do all the work for them so I'm not sure how people driving slow or unwilling to accelerate factors into a debate on auto's vs manuals...if anything those same idiots trying to overtake in a manual will be death on the road as they wont change down and will take forever to build up speed.

Auto's are simply put,idiot proof!

I took a trip between Die Wilgers and Centurion on Friday past. In our Opel Corsa 1600 5 speed manual, on the back roads.
The number of idiots in their stupid automatics that could not get a move on was astounding!
Big fat lazy slobs on their cell phones waiting for their cars to change gears .........
From top of the range BMWs through to the bottom feeder crap ones of all sorts of makes.
The BMW was driven by a women who hardly could see over the bonnet craning her neck and hanging on the steering wheel for support.

From BMW's to a single BMW? Get your story straight, Geoff :)

Exactly this.

The number of times I've been on long trips and watched in amazement as people take forever to pass trucks as they clearly haven't geared down.

At least in an auto the car would do the work for the nose picker when he/she put their foot down.

They have to "floor the accelerator". The idiots who take forever to pass are caught between not wanting to exceed the speed limit and wanting to pass.

I still don't understand how that has anything to do with the gearbox in the car? I have both a manual and an auto car, do I magically turn into a moron when driving the one and change back when driving the other? I'm sorry but I think the other oke was wrong, you have to be trolling us. No way can you be serious.

Just say you're trying to rile everyone up, that's the only thing that can explain your stance.

Nah, you actually can't be this daft... It's just not possible.

But then they'd not want to exceed the speed limit in a manual or automatic car.

Does not compute.
