Manual vs Automatic

Had manuals... then I had a CVT in a Jeep, a DSG, followed by a DCT and now I've got a CVT in a Subaru. Subaru knows how to do a great modern CVT that feels natural, overtakes easily and is reliable. DSG least reliable in my experience.

As for manuals... never again. Far more relaxing day to day to just focus on 2 pedals and a steering wheel. Not to mention all the other driver aids that came with my Subaru. Keeps you calm and composed and focused. Sometimes us mere mortals need a little help in this fast paced modern world. Manuals will eventually disappear, just like the ossewa and Hoover washing machines.

The point is, you learnt to drive on a manual and then migrated to automatics. That means regardless, you actually do know how to drive and can understand what the auto is doing AND how to get the "best" out of it.

The new generations tend to learn to drive on automatics and know squat about the theory of driving.

You cant compare motorised transport with animal-powered vehicles - the comparison is just stupid.

As to washing machines, the simplicity of a hoover is why it still works after 50 years. It is the perfect standby machine --- when all the modern ones fail, that one steps as if it never left the kitchen.
 
Every time I have to pick up a cheapie rental car I get a manual, and I'm always a little worried if I'll remember how to ... and it's never an issue. This last time for my trip to Cape Town I hadn't driven a manual in a year, and I stepped into that amazing beast of the Renault Kwid and didn't even stall as I pulled out of the airport parking lot ("rev it like a rental" helps with that). Some things really are like riding a bicycle, I guess.

The one advantage with auto is you can focus more on the road and the **** drivers.
It does make you a bit safer as you focus more on what is happening around you.

Total rubbish! The focus ends up on the other things in the car, cellphones, Navigation systems radios etc.
Drivers turn into automatons and morons!

I sold my DSG shifting money sucker recently after multiple issues.
I would at least stay away from the 7 speed dry clutch.

Driving my wife's Kia for now which has a 5 speed CVT.
Actually prefer the CVT over the DSG in traffic but DSG was much better for long trips.

I'd probably go DSG for myself again if I don't end up getting a weekend toy that would be manual.

Theory of driving in relation to what type of gearbox one has? What horseshyte is this?

Theory of driving does not require one to understand how to change gears at all, or what an automagic is doing.

The new generations tend to learn on automatics, and know just as much about the theory of driving as per the K53 requirements as you were required to know.

people will still be driving toyota tazzas' for the next 20 years so they will still be around
 
Gees ... is this still a debatable topic.
Why the Fk would anyone want to change gears on their own unless you in a race car ??
