Manual vs Automatic

Still loving my Figo Trend auto, torque converter means it's a bit heavy on juice but who cares it's a pleasure to drive.

Came across a guy today in a 4 x 4 automatic. He was struggling at about 30 km/h.
He finally pulled off the road. I stopped and asked him what was wrong.
The damn thing was stuck in 4 wheel low and would not disengage. We fiddled around for 20 minutes to get the stupid back into 2-wheel drive.
Now I know the same happens to manual drives as well but it usually takes a few seconds to sort out.
Down goes my opinion of automatics a few more notches.

Did you try turn the knob from 4L to 4H?

What 4x4 was it out of interest...

Well, I read the manual, and did everything the manual required and it still would not disengage. I then resorted to getting it into manual mode and then alternated between first and reverse over and over against before it released the 4-wheel mode.
Stuff all this electronic crap. Much happier with good old fashioned mechanical gear sticks!

Did your first car still come with a crank handle?

Drove an avanza auto for a few days. It was a rental, needed something with a bit more ground clearance.
It was k@k.
You put your foot down and it revs its nuts off, the lack of refinement and sound deadening didn't help either.

I know the feeling I had a rental for about 4 days for work that I had to take from Gauteng to Middleburg - The engine screams at legal highway speed like it need another gear for economy, you can feel the drag from it shape and you can literally see the tank emptying.

As I said bottom feeder crap automatics. And the gearbox type?
El cheapo CVT?

when EV's finally become commonplace, will ANY transmission become a Museum piece,
or will there be something for the petrolheads of today to enjoy?

Lol, as evidenced you clearly know very little about automatics.

On the freeway at the legal speed limit vehicles with CVT's don't rev very high, most modern CVT's vehicles will cruise at 120km under 2000rpm.

That Avanza has a 4spd automatic, not CVT.

Precisely, and its a fscking donkey shyte old automatic mated to a crap engine...

The more this thread goes on the more it becomes evident that Geoff is absolutely clueless about automatics in reality.

That and the fact that a CVT is not an automagic in the slightest.

Could not be bothered to research so I threw a klip in die bos.
Thanks for the info but you still hsve not answered the question of what type of "donkey style old automatic" it is.
Sure I have limited direct "experience" with new automatics, but each time I am exposed to one, my opinion just gets hardened.

Its a 4speed automatic, that makes it a donkey style old automatic... period.
