Hi there Office geniuses,

Is it possible to split a column in Excel into two separate columns? My issue is that the info contained in column A is not linear. I.e, the info after the comma (where I want to split the info) is in separate places (as below):

aaaaaa, bbbbbbb
ccccccccc, ddddd
eee, ffffffffffff

Must become:

aaaaaa bbbbbbb
ccccccccc ddddd
eee ffffffffffff

Many thanks

1) select the column and then select the data tab
2) click on text to columns
3) Chose delimited option and then next
4) select the comma check box
5) click finish

What version of Excel are you using? Sounds like you're looking for the text-to-columns function. On Excel 2010 it's listed in the "Data" ribbon. Click the column header, then click the data ribbon, then click text to columns.

Then select the "delimited" option, click "Next", then tick the "Comma" checkbox (clear whatever other defaults it might have selected), click "Next", click "Finish".

EDIT: I see I type too slowly, got beaten to the solution ;p

2007.

Thanks for all the responses. Appreciate it :)

If I understand correctly, you should be able to add a column, copy the current column with the comma data, then paste into the first column, then do a data text-to-columns sort using the comma as the delimiter.
You may have to copy the current comma data column to a new workbook to do this spilt then copy it back - depends on how complex your current spreadsheet looks.
