MTN Uncapped Lite for R299

Dude. You can't be serious. Tell you what, have you used dial-up? Now multiply that by two. That's the speed you get. PATHETIC. You'll get 500ms. Skype not possible, that's hallucination, even voice will struggle a lot.

Let's just hope they don't do anything stupid next month.

Yeah but dial-up never gives you the speeds they advertise (56.6kbps never happens. If you get 10% of that you're lucky...). So that doesn't tell me much about the actual speed needed for those things to work.

how workable is the throttled speed?

I agree with the two previous posters. If you are 'old' enough to have used dial-up then 128k is pathetic. Look, one can barely watch a youtube video with 1mb connection. When using 128k, forget about Skype, online gaming or any other interactive services. Let's hope MTN does the sensible thing and not thottle to unuseable speed, but I bet they will do the unsensible.

Hi,

The MTN Uncapped Lite package is fast, I have been testing it over the past few months and download speeds range between 150kb/s - 400kb/s.

However I noticed you posted your comment on the 15 December 2011.
I had been out of the office and tested the speeds from the 28 December 2011 up till today 4 January 2012 and yes I am now also getting 35kb/s max.

It did peak to 150kb/s but then just dropped and stayed at about 35kb/s.
I am not sure if this is MTN's new throttling policy or if something is just wrong with the network.

I shall give it till the end of the week and investigate further.

Anyone else experiencing the same issues?

Hey guys, is there a mtn rep available on the forum...

I got the Lite package and yes.... it is *@%#!!!! I contacted the 1555 helpdesk more than a week back on call: 00002995272 and was promised that they will come back to me in 24 hours regarding my BAD SPEEDS and never got a call back, 45 hours after the original call was logged, I phoned them again and yes, where promised that I'll get a call back within 24 hours again.... Then I left them a few days, without they calling me back. Phoned them Yesterday again and their calldesk lady (I have their names) told me that her supervisor (I have his name) will call me back within 20min. Never got the call!!! I phoned them 30min back just to get and answer that it is congestion that is causing my bad speeds! the best that I got today was 35kb/s, see the image.

Who can help me! I cancelled my ADSL because i only heard good things about the Lite Package....

This is exactly the reason I never did business with MTN after my first issue!!!

Please help ppl????

Until recently it's been pretty good, but seems it's changed/changing.

Did a test yesterday and at around midnight the speed went from 35kb/s to 250kb/s.
Seems they opening it up now only after midnight.

Will keep a eye on it.

I am very disappointed with my Uncapped Lite 3G 24mth contract from MTN . Between +- 16:00 to +- 00:00 my internet service/speed is almost non existing and this is particularly the time frame in which I need to use it most. I feel that the product that was sold to me does not meet my needs at all and therefor I feel it is my right as a consumer to not be bound to a 24mth contract for a product or service that I cannot use in the time I need it most. I have read previous comments from MTN stating they cannot guarantee the same speed all the time due to high consumption and that there technical teams are working on it. For the moment though they are not sorting out the problem and I basically have no speed at all during above mentioned times thus paying for a service that I do not have. So why should I be paying for the next 24mths for something that does not deliver???? I was sold a 24/7 internet service from MTN which I am not getting...Thus the contract is misleading. Dear MTN my question to you: What would you do if you were in my shoes? I need a solution not just an apology.

First of all, check that your signal is displaying 3G/HSDPA etc. If your signal is EDGE or GSM then you will have pathetic connection or no connection at all. I was made aware that under the Consumer Protection Act you can return the product witin 5 working days if you are not happy.

Secondly, take the MTN device and do a speedtest.net on different cell towers several km's from the place where you are planning to use it most. When doing the speedtest also test different servers, also test to Europe. I've noticed that the different providers for speedtest.net in SA doesn't always have the same results. I've obtained best speed results (even though I am on MTN) by using Telkom Mobile in Pretoria to speedtest. A friend of mine had a similair problem, crawling speed at home in Randfontein but blistering fast at his office in Pretoria CBD. MTN installed a roof antenna for him and he apparently now has much better service, but well enough for him to use youtube and online local gaming.

56.6kbps never happens. If you get 10% of that you're lucky

Most people got more than 10% :/

56.6k modems came a max theoretical 7kb/sec on your downloads. Most my friends and I would get about 60-70% of that number (average 4kb/sec and peak at just over 5kb/sec).

I'd guess the MTN 128 line would get that ... so 16kb/second.

So a about 1MB per minute download?
Is that right IT people?

You'll get more like 80Kbps. I kno this from the 1 day uncapped. I got 5Mbps, then 80Kbps, don't kno why it ain't maxing out.

lets call a spade a spade: there is nothing uncapped about this uncapped lite, you get three gigs, after that, you get a speed so slow and annoying that it is virtualy unusable, so: 3 gigs mtn 289 (plus you have to take a stupid contract and tie yourself) or... 2 gigs 8ta... 149, and i get close to 4mb/s throughout ( and they throw a free gig for midnight use) no contract papers needed, guys, uncapped should mean exactly that, uncapped... i HATE false advertising!

Looks like this service has seen its last... Speeds are Terrible! I think if they would just throttle one at about 1mbps it would still be great! What do you guys rate? How is the service handling the others? Feedback Please...

It's pretty pointless for feedback now. Because in two weeks time, we might be in for some drastic changes.

Well, don't have the package, but living in the heart of the city, never had trouble with sluggish speeds from the MTN and the 3 other operators.

Two weeks and two days to be precise.

I think these slow speeds you are reporting are signal or tower related. I have had my package now since middle november and I have totalled about 80gigs all together with now slump in speeds whatsoever. Torrents range between 200Kbs - 350 Kbs. youtube, skype and latency is very much acceptable(100-150ms). Would mtn be selective and only penalise certain users, I doubt it. Lets debate end of the month and see if there are throttleing.

Could be, but everything was working and mine started giving me trouble at the same time another user who posted above started getting slow speeds.. Hoping for the best Though....
