MWEB ADSL AUP: Fair is fair

I download whatever I want, whenever I want, using SSL and newsgroups. I'm pretty sure I bypass their shaping policy but I don't leave my line constantly downloading and wringing every possible byte out of my connection. I'm a heavy user and I think I'm being pretty fair, and so I think is Mweb...

I do the same but I see it a bypassing their shaping policies, My News server provides me with the option to run with or without SSL. So I use SSL as it gives me better performance.
What would MWeb like me to do, run in such a manner that it make their job easier to cap and shape me. I can't see how I am breaking any rules. What I can see though is MWebs inability to shape my service properly and so how is that my fault. They provided me with a line sad it was shaped and uncapped, so I use that line, if their system can't shape me then why is it my fault.

Seems most people now complaining about mweb are people that's actually not using it. How rich. Fact is that mweb is wasting the competition.

This is not what Rudi Jansen said at the recent MyBroadband conference.

He categorically stated they only consider multiple users (more than 1 user behind a router) as abuse.

Nothing about using different protocols, etc.

That is incorrect, you misunderstood. What he meant was concurrent connections, more than 1 router connection per account

A year ago Afrihost was ftw. Six months ago Mweb was ftw. Now they are slow and expensive. There are plenty of choices now. So not Mweb ftw but uncapped ftw.

There are many SMME's where it is a struggle to make ends meet and even the private user rates require a second look.

SMME's are creating jobs, and every item biting chunks from tight cash flows, could eventually kill such jobs!

which I thought was a "fair" option if you are a small business and like to manage everything yourself. The router even offers fail-over to 3G - because Telkom will let you down at some stage.

I don't know but I am convinced MWeb are playing very fair and that a lot of the complaints are related to small businesses owners who wanted to take advantage of the uncapped offerings and now seems surprised when they get reprimanded - or they misinterpreted what "shaped" meant. I was with WebAfrica for 7 years and am now seriously considering moving to MWebBusiness.

What would be fair is; if MWEB can provide clear and static rules on what type and volume of usage is acceptable and under which circumstances.

MWEB has had ample opportunity to review usage patterns and make decisions on what they deem to be fair.

It is time for transparency and a clear set of FUP's.

It would be fair and acceptable to provide a comprehensive F/AUP policy for all users across all ISP's.

This is their expertise and it is not acceptable to make up the rules as business develops (or so it would seem).

The F/AUP should be comprehensive and posted in the public domain for existing and prospective users.

I do 900 to 1000 gigs a month. I also have no problem with their shaping or AUP... but I guess that's cos I don't use Mweb!

Hi Gary & Gargmel, just to satisfy my curiosity but what are you downloading to use so much? Not asking for your taste in movies etc just the content type.

I go over 100G some months. Usually about 60-80G including say about 30G in video content. I dont find the time to watch it.

Hmm, as a internet service provider myself (not in the sense that I own an ISP, but deal with providing students with internet access at a varsity), I do understand where Mweb has a problem here. I get all sorts of crap from abusers and the ways people attempt to circumvent the network rules. I mean, the network rules, and in this case the shaping rules of Mweb are part of the FUP... they are there to stop people abusing. If someone is getting around them, ffs they KNOW they are getting around them! I mean, maxing out your line for extremely long periods of time... do you think the system admins are blind???
If the fence is put up, it is there for a reason, and if you jump the fence, you know that is not the correct route, so don't come crying when the bull charges!

I think Mweb have helped in a major way with uncapped in SA, and if you want to download a ton on a product that even has "surfer" in its title, then don't expect mercy. There are other options for downloading from Mweb.
I have been on the receiving end of Axxess' abuse policy twice in the last few months (not bw related), and even though I was pissed off, doesn't mean that I think Axxess are bastards and are unfair. I knew I was breaking the rules, but was trying to get away with it.

I think Gary has mentioned in the past he uses Axxess express. I use the same product, and it works very well for me... you can download 100's of gigs on it with no complaints from Axxess. They also did not increase the price for the 10Meg access ADSL lines. If you are going to use it for torrents, then get peer guardian as you may get warnings for illegal downloads.

+1, and normally the complainants are the guilty party, trying to justify themselves or their abusive ways.

I only download Linux Distros. but I have to download them again every month cos I only have a 1 terabyte hard drive and have to delete a lot of stuff every month.

Their product page clearly says "running a small office" . Then they say "“Section 13.4 of MWEB Connect's general terms and conditions states that unless you are subscribed to a business package, you may not use any services for anything other than your own personal use,”"

So which is it? More confusion - straight from MWEB.

I'm one of the lucky 99.99% of MWEB customers who have been getting great service from them. So far I haven't gotten any emails or whatever from them and most of the time I have to leave my connection downloading 24/7.

That said, if I ever did get into any trouble with them, I'd agree that their FUP is very nebulous and unspecific, it could be interpreted to mean anything they want. However, I don't beleive they will screw me over like that and if they do, I could always just move somewhere else. I clearly asked them, several times, before I signed up, if it would be a problem if I used the connection to the fullest. They said, definitely not. So far they have been living up to that promise.

At least I give them a fair chance, it's better than saying :"Oh wow, my insanely expensive account is just like ,OMG, so much better then something I've never tried before" like certain trolls in here.
