mmm so 23.5/7 is ok but seriously if can't 24/7 it shouldn't be called "uncapped"

I imagine it's the difference between coincidental and purposeful. If you're running EVERYTHING through HTTPS, that's probably on purpose. Doing your on-line banking and what-not through HTTPS, that's probably coincidental. If you start applying too many well-defined rules to dictate how and when people should be using their uncapped products, you'll have even more people whining about it on here, and you probably won't be able to call your product uncapped anyway.

rpm, you're missing the point. It's not about moving between ISP's.

MWEB has a great product and I'm a big fan and user.

However, just the fact that MyBB must post articles where MWEB has to explain their FUP shows how ambiguous it is.

Would you buy a TV if the salesman says it's high-def but when you can't display certain hi-def formats he points you to the T's&C's that says it might sometimes display certain formats, or it might not? But he can't really tell you which ones are supported or not. And it might change at any point.

All ISP's (including MWEB) should publish clearly defined Fair Usage Policies. Not these "we reserve the right to do what we want, when we feel like it" types we see today. I'm not even sure if it's legal under the CPA.
 
I upgraded to a 4mb so that I could bypass their shaping, pulled 600GB in a month, then downgraded back to 384 as that is more than enough to keep up with the series releases.

I just needed to grab all the prior seasons of some stuff, I still bypass shaping but on a 384, so its about 70-90gb a month. Don't see what ppl could be downloading when they do 600gb every month. I was running out of things to dl, so i even started downloading weird stuff like private practice and desperate housewives LOL
 
MWEB is trying hard to open up the web in this country (Telkom can't be bothered). The least that users can do is to support it not abuse it.
 
Having a set of parameters defined in the FUP would make it clear to everyone what the product can (or cannot) be used for. I know I'll "dance" within those parameters (for my SMB) so that I could pay less per month for something I don't really need (like unshaped *everything*) so I can save money to show better profits. Simple as that.

Tell me "4 gig of SSL traffic per month is fair" and I'll make sure I don't go over that.

I think this is completely fair
I often do 50GB on my uncapped mweb 384 line, no problems at all, good speeds and not a lot of shaping, but even when there is, its completely understandable right?
I think mweb is doing great things in improving the state of internet in South Africa.

Show me another uncapped ISP forcing the free peering. mweb ftw... :) I just feel they are pushing nice and hard for the consumer, hell they even brought us black ops servers.
 
I still believe calling it uncapped (when it is shaped) should not be allowed. In 10 years time when we have true uncapped for R200pm, there will still be companies selling heavily shaped uncapped for the same price, using the same name. Users who cant be bothered to read the T&C will be caught out, instead of being protected.

They wont even be able to call their unshaped, unthrottled accounts "Uncapped unshaped" because Axxess is already doing that. Selling their heavily shaped uncapped accounts with the name "uncapped unshaped"...

At the moment the only way to tell who sells the best product is to buy all of them and test it yourself. There is just no other way to get the truth about something these days.

Mweb is talking rubish, i got a email after being with them for 2 monthor 3 months, stating the above email saying i'm using things to bypass and downloading at full speed 24/7 for myself on a uncapped account. telling me to either cancel my contract or switch to that R1999 deal of theirs, i replied back asking but why, can they tell me excatly for what reason as its all for my self and if they wanna come to m y house they can to see its not running a business., then i got another email from them 2 days later stating sorry we have disconected your services as you are bypassing the system, i got no answer on my question i asked them, no second email, no call no nothing, just the darn email saying i'm cutt off.

they are a bunch of @ss's, instead of just comeing out and telling the people, dont donwload at full speed between x and x hours or not to exceed x amoutn of data a month. but they dont.

then they still get voted as being the TOP ISP ? i think they must be in the middel.

2) i get an aerovps box and proxy server
3) i use proxy to bypass shaping

How could you possibly claim ignorance? You wilfuly and purposefully bypassed their shaping. There is no grey area. Its deliberately done because your torrents and P2P connections were being shaped (as mweb has stated they would)

So in this case, definitely the user
 
Yeah fair enough. MWeb is in a trick spot though...as soon as its VPN'd they can't determine whether the traffic is legit or not.

And they can't just shape all encrypted traffic...skype & co will die.

By tunneling through an encrypted link...which is not permitted & will earn you an abuse notification.
 
Lol, it seems to me that everyone is forgetting that this is a business, M-Web is trying to squeeze as much juice out of the lemon as possible. But how hard they squeeze as to how much you pay, is a very fragile recipe.

All the ISPs are working hard to figure out what combination of price and product would be considered as valuable to the user, and still bring about a profit.

I believe that it's M-Webs service, they can do what the hell they want! But because we don't live in a free world, they have to comply to general business rules and have a "policy".

If you have experience with torrents or any other form of "bad habit", you will already know that it is possible to fool the ISP to not be able to tell what exactly you are doing. And the use of SSL and custom ports is the way to go. So the user is obviously lying, because he cannot proof that he is not, and since M-Web said he uses full line speed 24x7, it proofs from their side that he is lying. I also use remote desktop and FTP and E-Mail and and other business stuff, but they never use the full line speed for a long duration, this only happens when you ..... wait for it.... download! (including FTP btw. but that would be maxing your upsteam bandwith). Just notice that M-Web has nothing against downloading, just agains bypassing their shaping on downloads. (Which is the thing that keeps your (and everyone else) browsing smooth although you are downloading)

how can it be abuse if i paid for a service which i intend to use to its legal maximum?

no it not the same, a 512line can 64KB max that is it's max and no amout of shaping or cheating can change that. so the are selling me a product thats uncapped and i am not to use it? that is false advertising then isn't it
