MWEB Gaming Feedback

yeah damn patches random dcs etc, but mostly addons so turn it off!!

I'm having bad latency in dungeons. :( With no addons it does the same. I'll removed the addons folder completely (again) and see if I notice anything.

Any tips or tweaks for a 384kb user heretic?

yes there new option in wow optimize network, you need switch it off it uses extra bandwidth to lower the latency but on 384 there ain't much bandwidth :P

Quit wow,play eve , a real mmorpg. :D

If we could actually fly the ships, in the style of Privateer or Freelancer, Eve would be incredible. When is someone going to make *that* game?

oh poo you :p lol

I think hereticangel is probably right J0n0 (even if he is lacking a little tact :D). Please let us know your experience of having that setting on, or off so we can advise other 384k users.

+100000

What fun is "point and click" nowadays anyways?

hehehehe, here I thought he's mocking me for the narrowness of my pipe. :p

Will give it a go though. I also found this earlier on so trying it out as well.

Network Cards
Some network cards also have settings that when changed have corrected these types of issues. First, you need to navigate to your network card properties.

- Click on Start.
- Click on Control Panel.
- Double click on the System icon (in Windows XP, you may need to click Switch to Classic View on the left hand side of the screen).
- Select the Hardware tab.
- Click on Device Manager.
- Expand the section labeled Network Adapters.
- Right click on your network card and select Properties.

- Select the Advanced tab. You may have a Checksum Offload property, if so choose the Disabled option. This may also be listed as Hardware Checksum or RX Checksum.
- You may also have a Speed/Duplex option on the Advanced tab (This may also be listed as Media Type or Connection Type.) Please try changing this to Force base 100 Full duplex. If you have an older router you may need to use base 10 full duplex. This may also be listed as Media Type/Connection Type.
- If you have a Power Management tab in your network card properties, click it and unselect the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" if selected.

Hey will, I changed the checksum offload setting and so far latency's been good since. Didnt touch the "optimize network" setting in wow.

That's really good to know J0n0 thanks for the feedback. I'll make that one required reading for MWEB Guy so he can add it to his bag of tricks.

Hi Will

for some reason the latency to lotro have been really bad this weekend

where it is normally +-280 with no loss it seems to be 500+ with 15%+ loss this weekend
is there some issues on the network

Big problem here

Ping statistics for 193.105.173.147:
Packets: Sent = 95, Received = 72, Lost = 23 (24% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 321ms, Maximum = 336ms, Average = 326ms

Also had problems with LOTRO and Age of Conan especially yesterday. Latency would be around 380+ and spike to 4k regularly. Switched to my afrihost backup account and no problems with ping around 220. Switched back to mweb to double check and the spikes are back.

The past couple of days i have gotten 11-12kb/s off nttp (newsservers) during the day and it picks up after 8pm. going up to 38kb/s on my 384 at 1am. Uncapped 384? More like uncapped 128. Gaming will probably be effected too.

Oh yeh, just before you put the blame on telkom.

HTTP it goes at 38kb/s during the whole day so its not their line or ICP or W/E you normally wanna put the blame on.

Why the fck do you shape 384 users? Not like we can download allot anyway. To ISDN speeds....

PS: Stopped playing wow completely and sold my account.

Mweb news server. Thats whats so bad about it. The content is cached, tried multiple content. Mweb seems to be shaping the connection to their own news server. ROFL. Every night after 7 it starts picking up. So my question is how can they actually shape their own news server?

Sillicur those speeds are what I would consider to be in normal ranges for NNTP traffic on a 384k account, NNTP is not a priority service and will experience slower speeds during peak times.

I'd really prefer it if we could discuss the services without resorting to foul language, I'm sure the mybb admins would concur.

Thanks
Will

I think the team are ironing out some kinks with the new upstream traffic manager in London, which possibly could have caused this. Please let me know if this persists and I'll setup the necessary monitoring with you to do a full investigation. I'm quite excited about the fact that they have this in place now as it's been on the cards for a while and we're optimistic that it should provide an additional level of protection for the more sensitive traffic from the p2p bullies :D

Will, can you perhaps explain what you mean, particularly the term "bullies" in this context. Thx.

Sure thing Lounger always happy to clarify and this is quite simply a light hearted take on the subject on my part.

We know that p2p protocols by their very nature are aggressive and can quickly degrade the quality of the network if they are left to run rampant. This is really one of the primary reasons why effective traffic management and shaping policies are critical on any large consumer based network. It would be silly of me to refer to p2p users as bullies as often (if we need to have a discussion about customer demographics) they are the same people that require a good gaming experience as well.

So when I refer to p2p bullies I'm referring to the aggressive nature of bitorrent and other mass TCP connection "swarming" protocols and their tendency to try and fill all the available space, rather than the user groups who partake in p2p related activities.

I trust this clears things up for you.
