MWEB Throttling

I am just over 100gb in the last 30 days... on their policy its suppose to be uncapped..I am also another unsatisfied client cheers mweb

Been hearing all sorts of complains from our branches, just tested our uncapped (supposedly unshaped business accounts) from mweb and getting 1/4 of the speed we pay for. Cancelling ALL our accounts with immediate effect. It's simple Mweb, you don't provide the service, then I won't keep paying you for it. I'll move to an ISP who delivers what they're selling.

I thought you were with Afrihost?

Tried Afrihosts 1gb free and it worked fantastically.
Mweb has given our line a lot of trouble over the years, sending us emails that we are using our 4mb uncapped line incorrectly.

Sadly we cant move over because the family is in love with Mweb and they will swear by Mweb

Almost 6 months with Afrihost now, never had sch an enjoyable internet experience since is started doing ADSL. By the way i took the 50 GB capped, i struggle to finish it, and this month they gave me 50 GB extra, just nje!

I have an MWEB uncapped 4 Mb line at home, not just any 'uncapped', but uncapped premium no less (since 2010, the premium suffix came later, don't know when, and I didn't sign up for that flavor either.) and since the beginning of this year (2014), by roughly the 22nd my download speed drops to 54kbs. EVERY month, like clockwork. MWEB account status: Not capped (MWEB propaganda calls it throttling and ‘reaching the threshold’).
When I fire up speedtest the dial jumps to 3.5Mbp/s then slowly slides down to…yup…Dialup speed at 56k. It gets stuck here. Telkom guest account: 3.8…that will be Mb/s…
Having the telephone support guy 'reset my account' - and I have my full speed again after an hour or so. This lasts until my wife phones me the next day some time to tell me she can’t use the internet again. Some days she don’t even bother anymore. I have sent numerous mails to their complaints email, but if you expect anything from that then don’t. Phone them and ask for a permanent fix, well then a second-line support 'edgehunt' will have to phone you back. When? -Uhm... Dunno, surprisingly the telephone support guys can’t do much more than answer the phone and only buys time for a fabled second line support guy to phone you back. Supposedly this ‘second-line’ is significantly better informed, have dials on his screen and knows everything about the Internet. At least that’s what they make you believe at the time.
After several days I'm still waiting for an expert to phone. I've had several first line grunts, but nobody with a brain yet. I asked the last 'edgehunt' to check the throttling mechanism log files for my account details and then talk to me. It surely produces logs-right? Well, seems were wrong: MWEB throttling produces no accountable data or it’s (more likely) just beyond the capability of the first/second line support 'edgehunt'. Don’t make the same mistake I made… I was optimistic that ‘second line’ will bring some welcome improvement and facts other than the ‘Not capped’ (Sorry, ‘Throttled’ -In my days we used to call it “capped”) label on my account page for my premium uncapped 4Meg line. Boy, was I wrong about that…
Like clockwork my account was 54kb/s since the 22nd. I did a router restart after month end and YAY! 3.45Mb/s! Was I surprised? No... This is after my cap on my uncapped reset. Thank heavens for automation, else I would still be stuck on denial avenue with 56k…
I've spent several hours on the phone with them and have since come to the conclusion that their capping mechanism must be in error and they are capping me incorrectly. Of course this simple fact still eludes the MWEB geniuses I have had the misfortune to deal with.
Bottom line: Either by chance or on purpose it would appear that MWEB is capping uncapped accounts regardless of usage. See below image of my usage:
My recommendation: Stay away from MWEB uncapped, and they use the term 'uncapped' as a product label and not implying limitless, be warned. The additional throttling status also seems to be a useless addition in your account page as you may still be capped regardless of the status of this notice. I am unsure if this has happened to anybody else yet, Please post replies…
After this entire debacle I am obviously leaving MWEB soonest, but if anybody can suggest some way to get out of this weird capping without terminating the service it may serve someone after me…

I must say after reading this post I am glad we changed yesterday over to Vox Datapro. Had Mweb for years, complained, had the reps out, even technicians and they all said the lines are fine and running at full speed. Then I run a speed test and walla half line speed down and up with pings of over 200 ms.
Today can download and upload at full line speed. So far no problems. Will monitor for a month and evaluate. Will change the whole family once I am convinced it was a good change. Mweb will be loosing at least 8-10 accounts. And yes, all the accounts was on the uncapped premium packages.

I spent 2 hours on the phone with mweb today. At the start I told them I was throttled. They said no I was not. I could not log in to my usage account as the info had been changed from mweb side, and was going to take a few hours to get me a new password.

After the third call, I get told, yes I actually am throttled. I have a 1meg "Uncapped Premium" account and in the last month and 10 days have downloaded 160 gig. This has got me throttled down to slow as hell. Everything is affected. Mail, normal browsing everything.
I received no notice or email or anything that I was using up a cap on an uncapped product.

When I asked, all the call center agents said that a 2 meg uncapped basic is actually capped at 50-70 gig per month and the 1 meg Premium uncapped is capped at about 100 gig per month. The first I have ever heard of these sort of exact figures

I would like to know where this info is on their site? I specifically went for the Uncapped Premium account as I was assured by mweb that there is no capping or thresholds on that account type. A 1 meg Premium Uncapped line will be hard pressed to pull more than 300 gig a month.

Their business practices are dodgy as even if I cancel right now, I will be billed for this month AND the next month.

I average 50gig per month yet that fact and my history with them means nothing if I pass a non-disclosed cap in one never to be repeated download month.

Their "uncapped" "Premium" products should be banned by the ASA as they are shafting more and more clients with this scummy behavior.

I have posted this before, but as a warning to others - let me post it again ....

Get as far away from MWEB as possible!!

I'm new to MWEB i've only been with them for around 15 days and my usage is 44GB on my 2 MB uncapped... came from afrihost because I heard so many good things about MWEB. at the moment i'm getting throttled cant even stream a Youtube vid on 144p without it buffering every 10 seconds. The sad part is i'm in a 6 month contract and cant cancel my subscription. I know people say "get Premium" but when you go over the limit on Premium you still get throttled...

In your first month, you need to be careful of how you use your account in the first 15 days, as the system uses this info to predict what your future/next half month usage will be.

You've already used 44GB, meaning we can assume that by month end, your usage will be around 90GB. This is 20GB over what we know is the 2Mbps Standard Uncapped threshold.

So yes, upgrade to 2Mbit Premium (200GB threshold), or 4Mbit Standard, which will give you 40GB extra for R40 extra per month, very good value actually.

I feel like that attachment should be somewhere on their website, if it is and I cant find it I am sorry. I will upgrade to the 4 meg thanks for the help.

Fair point, but I do believe it only affects 10% or less of all MWEB Uncapped ADSL subscribers. Most people are light users.

Why not just put it there for the 10% to see.

Probably because profits are higher when people are unsure? Whereas if people knew the threshold, they'd capitalise and use what they know they can, when before, they didn't know.

Also, because the 10% or less probably browse MyBb. :p

mweb sucks !!!!

Been with them for 3 years, I don't think so. Still the best uncapped premium product.

Really? How many other uncapped products have you tried?

Thats the wonderful thing about opinions - everyone has one.

IMHO - 5 years with MWEB, have tried AH, WA and OW .... and I can say that MWEB are not that bad IMHO but the throttling policy, its implementation and the vagueness around the threshold sucks ... IMHO.
