MWEB Uncapped ADSL - Official Q & A

99% uptime still lets them be down 7 hours a month.

Okay, this month they have probably been down twice that amount, but it is still not bad for a best effort consumer service. If you want 100% uptime, you can get some redundancy by buying a gig of prepaid from one of the other ISPs that use different infrastructure. WebAfrica and Telkom seem to be working just fine.

Aye this is why I ask when it is all just going to work. The old mweb service is too expensive to stomach, but I was on it for a good 3 years for the simple reason that it just worked. There was rarely any downtime and latency was always stable. While we are on the subject though anyone know of a prepaid provider that has solid latency with regard for gaming use? GConnect failed that test hard.

Which part of "every few days its something else" wasn't clear? I am obviously not referring to this in isolation, but rather in the context of what the service as a whole has been like over the last month since its been around.

Nice attempt to obfuscate what you said. They're not at fault for the Seacom maintenance, so your moaning about uptime means very little in relation to today's interruptions. End of story.

It used to be a bit simpler when Mweb got all their international bandwidth from Telkom, who could do load balancing and fail-over routing. Now MWeb have to do this themselves over two entirely seprate networks (SEACOM and SAT-3).

The downside I'm seeing is that some MWeb international traffic being routed via AS6453 (Tata), which is working relatively well (even if it travels more than halfway around the world to get to Europe). The traffic that is being routed via the shorter SAT-3 link is very heavily congested, and this is where users seem to be experiencing problems.

It would seem that MWeb haven't got the balance quite right, and possibly the 'shaping' of low-priority protocols is not working effectively in this reconfigured network. I suspect similar hassles at first when SEACOM does come back online.

Well I hope they can finalize their system soon. If they can restore the security that their old offer held, this will be a very good product indeed.

Looking at the speeds, it cant be completed yet, was i the only one thinking seacoms web site would have up to the minute updates, or at least advise of the status.

So the slow speeds are due to the Seacom Maintenance? I thought that was done:/

Geez, here I was panicking about my slow speeds when in fact it was Seacom maintenance...I hope it completes soon.

How is that obfuscating? It was clarification of what I said, since you clearly lack the capacity to understand the language. Additionally my moaning it perfectly relevant. We had a similar incident earlier in the month, though that wasn't seacom that was mweb. In addition to that on about 5 occasions this month the international has gone down for a few moments, and on numerous other occasions there have been other minor stability interruptions. All of this inhibits my ability to use the internet, and I simply want to know when this is all going to settle down and the service will become stable. Clear enough for you?

Any mweb users done 160gbs + and experiencing bad p2p speeds? I've noticed theres not a period where I even reach 300kbps on 4mb dsl uncapped...

Most I think I get at any time is around 260kbps max, but often I get between 60kbps and 180kbps...

This looks all too much like 'permanent strict shaping' policy kind of scenario once a certain amount of bandwidth has been done..

Anyone else experiencing similar?

Just to mention, this was prior to any work done relating to the seacom cable...

Anyone else getting very slow speeds this morning? I know maintenance was delayed but is it still going?

*Edit* Damn! :wtf:

Just did a traceroute to Eve online servers in Europe.

16 Hops. Some mentionable areas :p

Mumbai -> Tokyo -> Newerk ( US NY ) -> London

So I think its still ongoing , ah well, off to work anyway.

Also getting crawling speeds! 40Kbs on a 4meg connection. hope it gets resolved fast

Yeah I been up all night, nothing has changed. Gaming is entirely impossible. Youtube is unusable. Only browsing works. Haven't tried downloads though.

...now imaging being on a 384k....what speeds do you think we getting? ZIP, NADA, NIKS, NIL

Now all you bloody guys were singing the praises of MWeb and I was questioning whether they were really that great and whether Afrihost might be a better option. Now I take the plunge and sign up for MWeb and all those predictions I made about them following the same route as all the other uncapped offerings seems to be happening. Of course I was repeatedly shot down when I insinuated this and was asked which other ISP I work for!!

Thanks guys!

Ummm.... xcuse the ignorance...but did you not see that the BULK of the comments here were mostly COMPLAINTS? I'm thinking of cancelling MWEB and going to either AH or WA... Who said you should go to MWEB?

As an Afrihost user I just have one thing to add to this thread:

*points and laughs*

Dont know what you ppl are on about, I am currently connected to Afrihost pay per gig and cant even open 1 international site .... if seacom is down, they all suffer.

Correction: I can not open any international sites with Afrihost, but I can with Mweb .... how is that for *points and laughs*

Would you like me to search for the large number of posts where I was accused of being an employee/owner of another ISP for stating that MWeb's T&Cs allowed them to impose even more stringent throttling/shaping etc than other ISPs? I even have numerous PMs singing the praises of MWeb and condemning Afrihost as a has-been ISP

So do we have a liar in our midst?

I just wish people would tell the truth about the ISP they are using so others reading this forum can use this information to make an informed decision about their ISP choice.

Hamjob, why would the MWeb news server be affected? Is that hosted internationally? Or do you think they have shut those protocols down totally while they are having problems?

EDIT : Oh, and I am able to get onto MSN.com so not sure it is international that is down

@CorneN ....yeah dude....AH is awesome but there are LOADS of anmosities between MWEB,WA and them, so you have peering issues to servers or they'll work but be extremely slow...
