Thought I would through this to the Forum and see if i am alone or if there is a general problem.

I recently got signed up for one of the 4mb Uncapped accounts and based on most of the post i read, I was hoping that it would be a good product.

First test I did was a Speedtest, got: 35ms, 2.2Mbps D and 0.44Mbps U. Thought that was a bit odd so I did a couple more test with all of them been about the same, give or take a few ms or Kbps. So I thought maybe it is just me, switch back to my old ISP and i get: 106ms, 3.5 Mbps D and 0.44Mbps U.

So i phone MWEB and ask them why they Shaping HTTP and they say that they don't shape HTTP, sure as hell looks like they do to me. 30min later on the phone and still no one can explain it to me.

The basics of my problem:
1. Crap speedtest results
2. Slow HTTP speeds, ave 200Kbps
3. Fast P2P, ave 400Kbps
4. NO ONE ABLE TO EXPLAIN THIS TO ME!!!!!!

So i am hoping that the Forum users can help me understand this better or that I will see that i am not the only one with this problem. I have checked the forums and I see that people are getting normal speedtest results on the 4mb uncapped account.

Please help, as the MWEB guys and not interested in help, only in speaking BS ATM.

Upgraded to 4mb a few months ago, never had any issues untill this weekend.
Haven't tested P2P since the problem started, but my SpeedTest results are very similar to yours. Logged a call with Mweb last night, still waiting on a reply.

Hi Stigmata101,

We take pride in providing customer service and are always here to help.

Your speed test results does not seem to be a true reflection of what you are experiencing, taking into consideration that you are getting 400Kbps on P2P (which is excellent).

Yes, we do not shape HTTP, depending on where the HTTP is downloading from. So could you provide me with the HTTP site you download from and do you know if it's a 1 click hosting site?

With troubleshooting we can come to a better understanding of what's actually happening at your end.

Kind regards,
MWEB Guy

Been with mweb uncapped for about 8 months now, haven't noticed any shaping on http downloads but P2P sucks!

maybe test with more than 1 speedtest server, im getting 1.1mb from the one, the others above 3.8mb
and testing downloads from sourceforge(tenet) maxes out my line speed
cant really use local speedtest.net servers as an indication, always getting mixed results :)

MWEB Guy, i am sure that you guys do take pride in your service. I spent 36min on the phone to the tech support guys, the last 6min i was hold and decided to hang up, still no call back 2 hrs later.

I am using the Standard Speedtest.net site to do the speed tests and general HTTP downloads. Both the tests, MWEB & AXXESS, resolve to a Newlands server:

AXXESS - http://www.speedtest.net/android/51253790.png
MWEB - http://www.speedtest.net/android/51377390.png

not sure about the 1 click site thing and not sure what driver i DL.

even when i was DL 400Kbps P2P, my speed test results were the same and my HTTP download speed was the same.

The basic answer i received from the desk support guys was that i should be happy what i am getting.

I am not a P2P person, online gaming and browsing is pretty much what i do.

my primary question i guess is how can i get a better P2P speed than HTTP, gaming is mostly better but never worse than before.

Valid, i will try some other 'speed test' services.

it should be noted that i used another ISP and completed the test to the same server, MWEB was over 1Mbps down even though the ping was 70ms less. i will try the JHB servers tonigt.

yeah, i know, mweb has been wonky for me the last few weeks, had to switch to my afrihost everytime i wanted to check trailers on youtube, but yeah, goolduck, hehe
i also tested speedtest.net now, with 2 jhb (vodacom and mtn) and a midrand server, getting lots of mixed results between afrihost unshaped, mweb uncapped and web africa shaped. (but yeah, mweb account got the worse scores)
downloaded nvidia drivers now at full line speed though.

you can also try downloads from nvidia and microsoft, i normally use them as a speed test, since they always max out my line :)

These 2 speedtests are taken within 5 minutes of each other. The one is using my MWeb uncapped, shaped account, and the other is using my WebAfrica capped account. There is a clear difference in speed. This is using the exact same router/line/everything - just the adsl account has been changed.

So this would be the same as what i am experiencing, are you happy with this or are you trying to find out why?

According to MWEB they do not shape HTTP traffic, would this mean that the Speedtest.net test is not HTTP, what is it then?

What is your general HTTP download speed on MWEB?

i am really trying to understand this issue and i am hoping that MWEB Guy will have some answers or that the Forum users will be able to help.

I don't know who to ask, and I'm loathed to phone the 'help desk' - pet hate of mine.

I have the same experience whether I'm downloading via http or ftp or doing a speedtest - speedtest.net is not the issue.

Personally I'll use my webafrica account until I run out of bandwidth :).

is anybody else experiencing problems whereby downloading a torrent from HTTP to import into utorrent... the file clocks a few Kbs and halts just before the download is complete.... have to stop it and restart, and then it might finish. And lately I have to constantly refresh web pages - wonder if this problem is related!

The overall speed isn't too bad tonight, but in general its much slower.... I only seem to get 400Kbs + after 1 2ish in the morning... otherwise I barely ever get 80Kbs/150KBs on this line. During the day its throttled to death barely getting 10Kbs! Weekends not too bad, around 150/250Kbs...

Also, lately, lots of disconnects, and sometimes everything just halts, or it suddenly starts crawling for an hour or two at night... and almost always I seem to battle to watch Youtube after 11 - Always buffering. Other times its great!......

Not sure what Mweb's problem is, but I have no issues on SAOL! - getting around 400/450ish

I just did the same tests using the mweb speedtest and my shaped saix account was pretty much double the download speed when compared to mweb.
I downloaded Win7 SP1 from microsoft and it took almost 1.5 days to complete the download. This is bringing back painfull 56k dial up days memories.

Did the try with the Nvidia, normally 350 to 400 odd, when i got home and now it is 250 to 280Kbps.

Stange thing now is my speed tests are back to normal. Feels like a nvidia benchmark hack cause i still DL HTTP slow.

I don't think that speedtest thing is acurate. yours has fantastic ping, slower than normal speed, but then it says 51% or 60% faster than ZA. When I did that last night, it said 60% slower, C- nogal at 2.9mbs. my ping was in the 400's ...

okay it seems a little different this morning:
