What is the point of having systems mails sent to clients addresses but excluding proper & accurate notification of lengthy downtime/interruption of "service" ??

I'm going to go with "Because Seacom haven't given them any details yet"

So basically, MWEB resells provides DATA to us via Seacom - so, Seacom goes down, tells MWEB XYZ story and they tell us.
Seacom hasn't given MWEB any ETA's on repair so MWEB can't give us any ETA's which I understand.

But don't tell us "will be fixed during the course of the weekend" and here, Sunday: 2:33pm, I can't even play games on STEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! let alone download.

My question then would be if MWEB & SEACOM don't know who are we actually paying because someone has to be more in the loop than them at this particular point....I'm joking...I fail to believe that no one can answer this question.

My speeds are spiking now...perhaps..I should do a reversal on next month's debit then calculate the downtime & deposit what is due....rich.

Corporate Image = - 35

If Mweb claim that they are back to 80% of their international capacity, so why do we not see any let up on the P2P. They are not throttling it, they are downright strangling it.

What are you getting these speeds on?
Downloading a windows update or what?

Try P2P or News servers and come talk to us again.

Downloading from a file sharing site similar to Rapidshare. I dont do torrents, never really liked it as its dependant on the number of seeds.

Yes they said 80% not 100%

That was uncalled for and you know it.

Not to play devils advocate but did you guys/girls actually read what you signed up for? All over the forum you guys are complaining about slow speeds with torrents and newsgroups.

When you signed up, you chose a SHAPED account, in other wise EVERYTHING else EXCEPT HTTP is SHAPED! This means that torrents and newsgroups will be slower than HTTP downloads. You all knew this when you signed up, now you are complaining that torrents and newsgroups are slow.

Obviously that is the case, you chose the product, you agreed and signed up. Blaming MWEB (in fact any ISP) when they openly admitted that the accounts will be shaped. Just astounds me. Give credit where it is due.

If you want cheap uncapped then you must download via HTTP (use a workaround for your torrents such as Downstrom or AeroVPS) *I did this and so far have downloaded 245GB this month on my 4MB uncapped account with MWEB.

Otherwise pay +-R899-R2600 for an UNSHAPED uncapped

@Linoman

I've had no problem with the shaping up until this weekend. But there is a big difference in shaping to 100Kb/s and shaping to less than 3Kb/s, even at 3am.

That is not normal protocol shaping; that is a complete violation of their customers trust and most likely South Africa's ADSL regulations.

We should not have to be looking for "workarounds". The product should just deliver what it promises.

If this continues, we will have witnessed yet another South African "Bait and Switch" operation, only this time on the grandest scale yet.

I am just hoping, though, that there really is an equipment fault, soon to be rectified, so that normal service can resume.

Since all of you seem to dislike MWEB so much, then go to another ISP. See if your torrents will run full speed on other ISP's shaped accounts. *Who would have thought shaped meant that the ISP's would slow down torrents and newsgroups*

However a couple of months ago we didn't even have uncapped accounts, days of only 2GB accounts. At least be a bit grateful

Uncapped accounts have been around for years, its just recently that they became affordable

Exactly but the affordable accounts are shaped. Which is sad but true. I don't agree with it but I knew it when I signed up with them.

Hopefully WACS and EASSy will enable us unshaped accounts at current shaped uncapped prices :)

@Linoman

I show more than enough gratitude when the payment comes off my account each month. And I have praised and lauded Mweb often enough on this forum for an excellent service so far. And I am quite willing to move elsewhere the moment the service does not live up to expectations, notwithstanding the month's notice period. But when service levels drop to the extent they have over the past few days, I'm not going to be mute, and pretend they haven't. All I want to establish from Mweb is this: Are these really exceptional circumstances, or a precursor for what we can expect in future? I would like to know so I can make a decision before month end.

I have used uncapped accounts for the past three years, not just a couple of months.

Having just moved a month ago to MWeb from Cybersmart, I tend to be fairly tolerant - Cybersmart set a rather low standard when it comes to customer service. Having said that, I do not agee with the "well you bought shaped and get what you deserve" argument. This weekends performance has been massively slower than the norm. In fact it has been signficantly worse than it is during normal working hours, which is when shaping should have the most impact.

The other thing is the lack of communication fro MWEB - I haven't received anything.

Ultimately however, we can just vote with our feet and move on. For me, this weekends performance is strike 1 against Mweb. The silly thing is it would only take open, honest communication and things would be a lot better.
The fact that this is over a wekend makes me suspect (note the word 'suspect') that this is some kind of planned maintenance gone wrong.

Still, hopefully this is not a regular occurence, or I'll be looking for another ISP soon.

The account I am using was opened in 1999 with iafrica and it still uses an @iafrica.com email address. That means that it's been in use for more than 10 years (11 years at the end of this month) and also means I've been an Mweb subscriber for quite some time. NEVER before have I seen such shoddy support from Mweb. Ever since this uncapped came about, I've experienced nothing but excuses from them and my only problem is: my parents are holding onto their 11 year-old email addresses for dear life (even though my mom has about 2 gigs if spam in her mailbox every month) so I have no choice but to be an Mweb member.

Stroebs i was in the same boat as you a while ago, some ISP's can retain your email addy for a small fee. I am currently paying R15 for my old email addy. Been using gmail ever since :)

The key here is balance - I posted something about this somewhere in this thread...I was not under the impression that I would download at full speeds on all protocols on this account but shaping all other protocols to death is not what I call balance. If this is the way forward I will happily return to my previous ISP for a little more money but decent speeds across the board. I also actually recommended MWEB to some friends and family but I think I spoke to soon. We will see in the coming weeks if this was really 'SEACOM' or MWEB testing the waters with regards to shaping.
