MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

I think MWEB is still having capacity problems like that MWEB guy posted yesterday... especially if p2p and news downloads are 0kb... that is definitely not normal and very severe shaping to the tune of the network not having enough capacity to service all downloads / services and then cutting p2p / news completely.
The uptake must have been massive!

The MWEB guy didn't post again today about the capacity problem, or an update, at least that I have seen.

Anyway, just a hunch.
EDIT: I saw that the MWEB guy did post in the Q&A thread ...

Hi All,

Firstly apologies for the lack of response today, have only been able to pop in every now & then.

MWEB are well aware of the current capacity constraints on non-priority bandwidth (torrents, news, rapidshare etc.) and are pushing hard to alleviate the situation. The severe levels of shaping being experienced on non-priority traffic is not the norm, however this does not mean line speed all the time is either.

The non-priority bandwidth crunch is a result of a mismatch between additional capacity being bought online and the migration of the existing user base together with the unprecedented demand for new signups. Migrations/sales have got a bit ahead of new capacity deployment necessitating that we squeeze the non-priority traffic to maintain reasonable performance for the service as a whole.

We expect to have the situation rectified in the next few days, however we are reliant on Telkom commissioning the (already delayed) additional capacity. In the mean time MWEB has temporarily paused the migration of existing users until this initial capacity expansion is complete (to be followed by additional capacity expansions). Our engineers are also investigating way of fine tuning our bandwidth management policies to improve performance of non-priority traffic.

We ask for a little more patience, MWEB is still commited to delivering the most compelling price-to-performance uncapped offering to the market.

MWB.

At 10pm last night, the pipes opened up for me, at 7:30am the pipes were still open for me. I have CACTI graphing everything so it's cool.
Average speed of ± 420KB/s

I don't expect it to stay like this all the time, but I am enjoying graphing all this.
When the pipes open, when they close, etc etc.

Glad to hear, as now its a difficult choice to make as to who to switch to.

Monitor the feedback from current users (via this thread) and decide into the new month - remember, witch each passing day, someone "new" enters the uncapped market - I expect big things from WebAfrica and yes, even Telkom ;)

Left Newsbin open last night after I went to bed (11:00 PM). Downloaded a whole 327.6MB by the time I woke up this morning. (4096 line)

Seems Mweb are having the same problems that Screamer and Digichilli had. Didn't plan for the "rush" of early uptakers and now the network is suffering.

The thing that really ... and I mean ... really bug me is the fact that there is 1000 accounts given away for free which might impact us in a bad way.

Hopefully the bandwidth available isn't over utilized .... or the shaping affects us negatively

Is mweb blocking vpn?

I can't use hamachi. As soon as it connects, it disconnects again :(

I'm getting 400kBps + this morning :)

Same here. The shaping did not kick in at 7am this morning like it did yesterday. I hope this means the extra bandwidth capacity Mweb were waiting for from Telkom has been implemented.

From experience I know that Mweb gives the same priority to VPN traffic as p2p traffic. At least this is what I have experienced with my OpenVPN link to the office. I you have any p2p/torrents/usenet downloads running try stopping them and see if this makes a difference to Hamachi.

Same here. Got 420kbs on a torrent. Seems fine. Might slow down during the day. But will speed up later again then. So its not a bad price for a account that works like it should.

My hamachi works, currently connected to my home pc from work

Which windows you running?

I'm running windows 7, is anyone aware of any problems with 7?

It's weird though. I installed hamachi this morning at bout 7am and it was connected for 30 mins then all of a sudden it keeps saying 'reconnecting...' and the moment it says 'connected' it disconnects again.

Guess I'll try it again tonight.

I reckon even if it worked at 40% capacity for 8 hours a day it would be a well priced product. On a 4mb line you could still pull in excess of 140gb a month. R3.85 a gig excluding line rental?!!!! Nothing wrong with that but as human nature would have it people are up in arms cause they can't pull 1.5gb a hour 24/7 without repercussions or a shaped/throttled/degraded service... I don't get it... Then you have the mtns and vodacoms of the world charging R1-20 a meg!!!! Ridiculous...

I'm having a blast with the uncapped offering at the moment.
I stopped my downloads earlier - disks space is going to be more expensive than bandwith !!!

lol, im not even downloading anything at the moment, do yourself a favor, open Winamp, go to Library, go to Shoutcast TV, and click on Mystery Science Theater 3000, they stream it 24/7..........24/7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111111111111111111

PS: Also check out Shoutcast Radio, got awesome and uncensored stand up comedy radio channels there.

Had a message from Hamachi that they restarted their servers this morning @ 8. Usually after a restart you get that as everyone want to connect at the same time. Just leave it be and it will eventually find a slot...

Thanks! What a relief :)

Hopefully I can start connecting to my home pc again :)
