Well this is about the worst it's been on MWEB. Past midnight on a Saturday...torrents running at ~6k, newsgroups at 0.6k -if it carries on like this I'll definitely be cancelling. You can't sell a light browsing/email product for this price and call it 'broadband', nevermind 'uncapped'. It's a total ripoff.
 
Someone found the "cool network speed buttom" at 1:00am this morning. Since then it was pretty speedy. Hope it lasts...

Well at exactly 8:00 it dived down to 100 kbps. On the dot...dynamic shaping my ass. More like throttle control.

Happened here too. Dropped to 80kbps. You can set you watch by when they turn shaping back on.

1am on, 8am off. My graphs look like table mountain.
 
So why can't I stream a Youtube video? Why are my downloads only running at 100KB/S? On a 4meg line? While I am paying for a 4meg account?

So would you say it can't be "dynamic" i.e based on how many users are online.?

Sorry this may be shot in the dark. When you look at the cinx stats and the times both of you mention they are they are both at a very similar level. At 01:00 dipping below that point and at 8:10 or so going above it.

shaping,i'm going to downgrade to something around 1mb/s since i almost never even get 1mb/s.

My connection has been randomly disconnecting all night and day today.

It is strange however that you can almost set your watch by these dips and increaces. Speed I'm getting atm is slower than "normal" weekend speeds, more like weekday speeds. So I guess these speeds will stick around till 11pm tonight, then get boosted a bit, etc... That's not very dynamic at all.

Do you have a link for the stats?

It's def not dynamic based on the number of users online. It's too regular for that

Would also be interesting to see just the mweb portion of the graph, and then compare it with the shaping. Also would be interesting to compare with JHB guys

Indeed very interesting, but I'm guessing MWEB's contribution to CINX traffic is not a small one.

oh and... SINCE WHEN IS IT NONE OF OUR BUSINESS THAT OUR ISP CAN JUST CUT LINKS LIKE THAT WITHOUT AT LEAST TELLING US FIRST?

Hi Everyone

We have provided very clear explanations about how shaping works in the past. I've checked back through posts just to clarify where the concept of dynamic was brought up so that I can understand where the confusion is coming from: This is the point I believe you are referring to:

News is given the same priority as Peer to Peer for shaping purposes, it's difficult for me to give you any predictions on speed as the shaping is dynamic dependent on the network load and time of day.

This was said in the context of someone asking us to predict P2P speeds and it is a completely accurate response.

At no point have we made any secret of the fact that bandwidth allocations are adjusted at different times of the day. There are various timebands set during business hours and after hours which control the increases and decreases in the overall amount of available P2P capacity.

Users of P2P will then contend the available bandwidth for these services amongst themselves.

In other words we do not set fixed speeds for P2P, we set fixed capacity. If you get lower speeds, it's because more people are engaging in these activities.

So will you see a drop in P2P speeds at certain times of the day? Absolutely. When the capacity allocated to P2P is decreased and everyone still has their torrents queued up the speeds will decrease accordingly.

We may also, at our discretion, make dynamic adjustments to these timebands and the size of the P2P pools based on network performance and usage trends.

This also serves to highlight why adhering to the acceptable usage policy is so important.

Intentionally obfuscating the nature of your downloads by passing your P2P traffic through other services you are not only putting pressure on the network by giving high priority to traffic which should be low priority. You are also creating a false impression of the amount of P2P usage there is on the network, which affects our ability to accurately forecast how much allocation is needed for these activities going forward.

I trust this serves to clear up any misunderstanding that may have arisen about the manner in which shaping policies can be considered to be dynamic.

IMO some people will never be happy, and complain they are getting a raw deal, unless they get exactly what they want...
 
Are there any plans to unbundle the NNTP from P2P? I remember reading something like this was in the pipeline?

The P2P users are killing it for us :)
