Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I'm looking to switch ISP. I'm currently on a 20gig cap unshaped account on a 4mb line - I was thinking of switching to MWEB's uncapped account on the shaped line.

I'm curious about a few things - I do a lot of video streaming especially watching sports online through Veetle or Sopcast links... would the MWEB shaped account be able to handle the streaming without any lag?

Also on average what download speeds would I get on the 4mb line.

Thanks

ok, ran the speed test suggested by MwebGuy, and this is the results I geton a 512k Uncapped A/c:

Download Speed: 293 kbps (36.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 263 kbps (32.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: -1 ms

To me, that does not look right @ all...

Hi DaDon,

Was there anything running in the background of your PC when you ran the speed test? Can you also do a tracert to an international & local site please?

Also send me the actual speed of a download illustrated in a screenshot.

Kind regards,

MWEB Guy

Monthly or what? Good monthly downloads. About 70GB. On 384k is brilliant in my opinion I just don't want it to all of a sudden get shaped between 10:00 and 16:00??? Why now all of a sudden? Royal wedding perhaps... Not to sure if that was online 3 days ago because I don't follow it at all. That would be 6 hoursa of shaping. 1/4 of the day. 1/4 of the month...

My understanding is that dynamic shaping means that traffic is shaped based on network usage, not time of day. If all business users and all unshaped users turned their routers off at 10:00, for example, then all torrents would increase in speed at 10:00. It's not a matter, AFAIK, of shaping between certain times; rather, shaping is automatically increased during the times when there is increased network load.

The load is directly manageable by capacity is it not? Put more people on and the shaper has to work harder, which is why the pings fluctuate. Buy more capacity and things are better. But then blaming the torrent downloaders is more convenient.

Also, they tweak the shaper often, which means as soon as some capacity comes along, they shape more rather (cost benefit) than offer it to P2P uncapped.

Well from what I understand they pretty much saying "tough luck, we can limit you whenever traffic is heavy coz you're on a shaped account"

I understand that, and I am willing to accept that thisRoyal Wedding nonsense might have caused it to. But not for 3 days...

Anywho! Will monitor and report back.

Torrents? on MWEB? HAHAHA!!! Nice joke. It's a news server MWEB Guy :)

Still cant get below 250ms on my Battleping, what has changed since the last problem that my ping has increased by 20 ms and will not go lower? I play WoW at its highest level where my connection being stable and low are prerequisites for staying in the guild. Please inform me as to what is causing this? My line stats have not changed at all.

I'm also experiencing intermittent international connection outages in the last hour or so. Goes off for a few minutes then comes back and so on.

Hi guys,

I just received an update that there was an International outage experienced in London at 16:32 and 17:17.
All services impacted each outage was approx 5 minutes.

Engineers are investigating root cause.

NNTP and general.

Yesterday I tried downloading DirectX 9.0c June release or whatever.... 7kb. Peaked at 13kb.

NNTP speeds are erratic as per my log. On both IP and mweb server.

And yes, I know you have the right to shape my account etc but it's never happened before, so why now? And the weird times?

Edit: When my speeds go low, I see people complain about slow international browsing to... odd.
