Maybe a rule that limits the amount of connections per minute,second,15seconds.

iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 25 -i eth0 -m state --state NEW -m recent --set

iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 25 -i eth0 -m state --state NEW -m recent --update --seconds 10 --hitcount 4 -j DROP

or something like that.

its effectively the same thing, just not so permanent.

edit: ugh what do i care

and we tried that too, but it was ineffective and prone to generating false positives under certain circumstances :p

so in other words you can read our outgoing mail, or parts of it :)

As can the ISP of your intended recipient, unless you are employing some level of encryption.

I think you would be hard pressed to find an ISP with any significantly sized customer base that doesn't employ a degree of virus and spam scanning on both their in and outbound mail environments.

If you have serious concerns about this and would like to ensure that your mail is not scanned at any point might I suggest using some form of encryption and acquiring an externally hosted mail server using an SSL connection on Port 465?

My uncapped mweb account has been bad for the last few days - particularly streaming video and WoW traffic. I found myself having to switch over my backup adsl account which kind of defeats the purpose of an uncapped account. It shouldn't be anything to do with my line given that when I switch adsl accounts - everything works smoothly.

EDIT:
I'm based in Durban if it makes a difference.

im in pmb and am currently posting this off my fnb account as my mweb account is currently useless.
for 2 or 3 days at a time it just does nothing.
it dials out, connects and then does nothing.
i can resolve a url to an ip, but thats it.
pings, traceroutes etc all fail out of the first hop.

help please :D

Hi sp4ceman,

Please can you provide me your Mweb account details as well as the traceroutes you did as this will aid in further investigation.

Regards,
MWEB Guy

@ Mweb. I'd like to congratulate you all on the improved dynamic shaping. It's working well ! 2011 is the year you free the web from all downloaders, NNTP users, Torrent abusers and the like ! Well done guys. Since 3 July whatever you've implemented - it's working 100%. :)

@Will, next time you chat to the Unix team, chat about PMS, it was a inhouse antispam technique that showed great promise but never made it out the doors.

News Server is down for me. Last two days, up and down, dropping the connection etc. Logging me off automatically...

hmm, wouldn't pimping out the local news server, so that users rather use that, take a BIG strain of international bandwidth loads? :(

International isn't the problem. It's Telkom's high IPC costs.

Yeah, isn't it ridiculous that the bottle-neck is not international capacity/cost, but local capacity/cost. We can get the data to the landing point, but then we can't haul it around the country.

I'm reaching my wits end with Mweb. I've complained and complained about slow downloads (Steam downloading at 15-25kb/s) my horrible ping in Starcraft II. And nothing is being done.

Currently I'm paying R539 a month for an account that can barely manage a download speed of 30kb/s.

I'd appreciate a kiss before you **** me.

Been a while that I was last irritated with Mweb's network. I needed a 113Mb file last night and it took forever to come down...at full 30kbps on a 4mbps line...

considering that I have been a good boy of late I was rather disappointed...

Good afternoon SpoOkie, I have escalated your query to our Premiere support team for assitance.

Thank you very much MWEB Guy.

I can understand shaping protocols and network strain and all that, but if it is constantly so slow why shouldn't I just swap to a 384KB or 1MB uncapped offer instead?

*Gotta love Cartman*
