I have no idea of the size of the mweb unshaped client basis, but I have been using it (4mb) since it came out and have had very few problems. I get about 300 Gb per month and email and browse quite happily. I wonder how many of these loud complaints are individual based. What I'm saying is what is the percentage of the complaints vs the total client base. It seems to me to very small and if correct would indicate specific invidual problems, it's not as though 100% of the client base is complaining. And no I'm not an MWEB employee!

I think its gamers that have the biggest problem with mweb uncapped. For some reason Steam access is non existent, even at night.

I'm also having problems with Filesonic and Megupload links not resolving during the day and early evening. Switching to another ISP resolves this problem. After about 11pm links resolve on MWEB. This started at time of SEACOM outage.

I have used about 30Gb of data this month. Previous months about 100Gb. I did not receive any communication from MWEB warning of breach of acceptable use policy.

I find it hard to believe that the problem could just be related to shaping on p2p and http downloads. As I understand it that would mean that usage on MWEB's network increased in one days time to such an extend that http downloads is shaped to 0kb/s.

I would just like some kind of acknowledgement from MWEB. Is there a problem with bandwith - just let me know. I'm a being throttled because of heavy downloading - just let me know.

Hi, I'm sincerely hoping MWeb Guy can help us with this. At work we have been on Uncapped 1mb MWeb for a long time (it was originally 512 mbps but I'm told Telkom did away with that speed and MWeb altered their product to suit. Usually the service has been pretty consistent but since two weeks ago when we logged a fault with Telkom and it was supposedly fixed, we have been unable to get much of a connection at all. Plenty of sites won't load, banking is a disaster, emails won't download etc. Telkom now say we are too far from the exchange - more than 5 km - and therefore the attenuation is too high. Router stats are as follows:

connection speed: downstream 800 kbps upstream 480 kbps
Line attenuation: 63.5db down 31.5db up
Noise margin 11.9db down 8.0 db up

I know the information on this thread indicates that we are in a bad situation but WHY has it been working well for a few years (give or take the odd problem) and now suddenly we have no service at all. The telkom technie who came here said there is nothing wrong with the line, it's purely a distance problem, and maybe we should downgrade to 512 mbps - but Telkom and MWeb don't actually offer that any more!!! He changed the DSLAM port, that did absolutely nothing, the fault is still open at Telkom but I suspect the technicians are now ignoring us. BTW, we are using a Netgear N300 but none of us are very technical!

So, we are tearing our hair out, it is impossible to carry out our normal business in a "medical" practice and I have had to use a vodacom connection for emergencies. Telkom and MWeb are blaming each other and we can't get to the bottom of who's right and what can be done to restore a service that should be on all day!

My boss is adamant that we shouldn't have to downgrade to 384 kbps, if it worked 2 weeks ago, it should be fixable now!

Please help, advise, make suggestions. We are now desperate.

Nvidia driver downloads can sometimes be affected by slow Akamai sources and is a separate issue. We have been working for quite some time now to get an Akamai node hosted directly on the MWEB network, which would improve the situation with a lot of downloads of this type, unfortunately I can't provide you with an ETA on this.

I am new in this forum. Hi have been reading through all the posts about fileserve and Hotfile and even Filesonic. I also use these sites to download stuff, and yes I have also find that since the Seacom downtime one can only download after 11 at night. I just have a question for how long will this go on ? Will the be fixed once the Bandwidth upgrade has been implemented ? I would be nice to know I think it will also make most people much happier if the question can be answered, then at least we know....

Mweb do seem to go through periods when the speeds are bad.. Last time when we had problems like this it lasted for about a month (Around May/June this year)

for some reason neither mweb, nor afrihost, nor axxess, nor cybersmart are working at this moment. cant even browse... time out everywhere. not nice. and my cell C are down as well... wtf....????????

Mweb guy, how is it that you don't offer trial accounts anymore but I'm still hearing about people getting them?

I'm guessing that if you call Mweb and ask they will help out, but that they aren't giving you guys the full story or something.

So i thought I'd do a test, loaded openvpn and suddenly everything connected again. Either my logic is wrong or it's a clear sign my nntp is being blocked.

I'm having the exact same issue with either newsgroupdirect & astraweb, either secure or insecure ports. I've been gone for a month, before leaving would get full line speed whenever I tried, now it won't even connect. I also loaded openvpn, and the lines work perfectly over VPN, so clearly it is extremely heavy shaping as nothing will download. how long has this been going on? If it isn't fixed soon, I'll be jumping ship as well. I honestly don't mind shaping. Shape it to 50kb/s or even a little lower, but to completely shut it down is ridiculous. That is not "shaping" it is blocking. It is also frustrating that their standard response is "we shape p2p traffic" shaping means it still works. Very Frustrating.

@Will, I just got home to get changed before going out and I see that some of my issues are back again. Web browsing is fine ( posting now obviously ) but steam is dead. Eve appears to be working as I managed to login and actually get into space. News is running at the mo in the background at a rough 50k which is fine ( Mweb news server ).

I've restarted steam numerous time but no joy. It's configured for SA - Jhb Mweb which should be the closest server to me I beleive. To help test, I've left a p2p session as well which has nothing dl but some ul, this is however showing zero traffic. I'm not concerned about the p2p traffic, especially as its in the middle of the day but steam does. I'll check back in a few hours when I'm back online. My routers security logs show no disconection today at anytime so whatever has happened, doesn't appear to be an issue with my equipment. If you can think of any tests I can run, let me know and I'll gladly do them and post the results.
