ROFL - trying to download a file from Rapidshare - its 50MB - I have a 4MB line - 1 day remaining.

@chaindfly if you abuse a account you will be shaped to death. for the normal guy who wants a cheap unshaped uncapped this system will work perfectly.

Thanks guys, this is really valuable feedback. We're not here to pick a fight with anyone, or to hang around waiting for compliments. We're here to connect with our customers and understand what they think of us and for that to work constructive criticism and suggestions like these are worth 10 times more than the compliments.

I actually agree completely with GingerBeer (although I kind of hope he fell off his chair when I said that). I don't think our uncapped product is at the point yet where it's going to be the 1st choice connection for serious gamers, but then again serious gamers do have very specific needs and can set the bar fairly high as we've discussed here.

What I am glad to see is that there certainly are gamers who find it good enough to play on, that's a good base to start working from in my opinion.

@Degaron. That's good detective work on your part :). We are aware that some in-game content delivery gets handled by the shaper and misdetected as something called 'behavioural download' which gets the same priority as P2P. It's definitely not an ideal situation and we need to work on improving this.
I know our network engineers have most of their attention focused on preparing for the next IPC upgrade right now, but I'll do what I can to get some priority attached to looking into this and at very least provide some feedback soon on what we can and can't do in this area.

Regarding accounts more suited to gaming I agree that the unshaped uncapped product is a bit of an overkill for someone who just wants a good gaming experience and isn't trying to create an offline backup of Demonoid. (a sales person died when I said that :p )

Bear in mind though that both our uncapped products and our IPC network are still relatively new and right now the focus is on strengthening the network and getting a 10mb offering into the market.
We simply wouldn't be doing any justice to our customers right now if we introduced a product tailored for gamers that didn't deliver the goods, but that doesn't mean that it isn't a possiblity for the future.

Kind Regards
MWEB Operations (Tech Manager)

Carry on culling the sales guys!
Get more IPC and tech guys with their salaries + life insurance :p

I moved to 4mb and haven't had too many issues, rapidshare is shaped to hell and beyond and NEVER lets up, but torrents seem to be normally around 200KB/s on average

What is a "behavioural download"?

My understanding is that it's essentially traffic which has similar behavioural characteristics to P2P, but doesn't carry a signature for a known P2P application.

If international gaming could get completely unshaped (because lets face it, game traffic is so small its practically non-existant), I would be very happy. This is always something that gets overlooked by ISPs (or does it?) and gaming gets caught up in the blanket of shaping rules. Shaping gaming purely for the amount of traffic it generates wouldn't make any sense, since it probably creates less traffic for the average user than email. Shaping it to force gamers over onto expensive unshaped accounts is another story.

That said, my experience with Heroes of Newerth and Starcraft II has been good, in particular HoN which doesn't seem to be shaped at all. WoW is flaky, some days its really good (200-300ms), other days its unplayable.

MWEB has more than enough money to upgrade their network to handle all-traffic, do not let them lie to you. They choose to waste time to upgrade because they are making a lot of money from the average African internet user(none 4mb liners), "why fix something that isn't broken?"

This country is being run by corrupt companies and their government buddies. Believe me, multichoice/Naspers Limited have made more than and I do mean MORE than enough money with DSTV(#1 provider in ALL of Africa and they charge even more than other continent for below average/un-updated content).

But what can we do, let's just Pray and hope someone talks the Government into letting go or at least PUSHING Telkom to do IT'S part, not in 5 years but in the next 3 months(wishful thinking I know lol)

@Blackhand Thanks for the feedback and I agree this is definitely a 'work on' area for us.

@VioAdmin We've never inidicated that there were any financial constraints regarding network upgrades - as with any large IT project these are questions of timing and resource availability.

I just checked some of the axxess feedback, and i'm not so sure that going to work so well, there's people who can barely browse due to the heavy IS shaping

no what actually needs to happen is the people who are circumventing the shaping and getting away with it (saw a thread somewhere here of someone who pulled 50gb in a weekend on mweb :wtf:)should also get either a warning or ban hammer, or MWEB should try and create a account kinda like openweb gold for the more hardcore internet user

Im with axxess express+ and im not shaped? and i've done over 100GB this month...

@Deragon, so you think paying 899.00R a month is cheap? :)

MWEB might be a Naspers company but have some respect, Where Do you see telkom reps replying to this forum and Neotel Reps Replying, thats right you see none because they dont care. atleast we can say that Mwebs rep is a normal person and not an automated machine. It might be a sales front but think for a moment, theres always two sides of a story.

Before you say something put yourself in Mwebs shoes for a moment.

@Semaphore

No Semaphore I dont think that at all. even with line rental thrown in its expensive enough. and dont make assumptions of what I think.

Im not making assumptions, you said it yourself :D

It could have been directed at his mweb comment or his axxess comment, that's all up to interpretation.

There have been articles on the front page of this site that Mweb wants to expand its IPC bandwidth, but Telkom isn't ready.

http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/14438-MWEBs-Mbps-uncapped-ADSL-plans-hamstrung-Telkom.html

Basically Telkom is out of capacity.

Yes MWEB please un shape gaming traffic.

The actual amount of data sent is very low while playing games and it would definitely improve the experience allot

Although I’m busy fighting Telkom to just get my line fixed
Since last week Thursday my line can’t keep a sync for longer than 3 minutes

I recon I'm cancelling this month - haven't gone much over 100KB/s anytime - even browsing is damn slow.... Youtube/video streaming sites sit buffering most of the time.

ROFL - trying to download a file from Rapidshare - its 50MB - I have a 4MB line - 1 day remaining.

Hey man, I've got the same issue from around start of this month. I think I will have to move as well as it is getting very slow lately :( I haven't even been downloading that much, maybe like 30gig per month on my 4mb line... I used to be able to watch Youtube vids at 720p, now 360p is buffering all the time :(

Same - I think I've done more than I usually do, but I'm almost certain its not over 80GB... but even when it was 1GB - Video's just don't go.

Boxee.tv has all sorts of pluggings, youtube, etc... and I used to click a video and watch it without buffering- now it just buffers the whole time... some of the video apps in boxee are quite small and unknown - so they must be throttling connections now... I find it impossible that the shaping is this bad.

I scheduled a 3.5GB download at 6pm last night - this morning it had done 1.5GB - it should be able to do that in just over an hour. How are we supposed to stay inline with their AUP when moving 3.5GB which can easily be completed 4 hours while I'm at the computer takes over 12 hours to do less than 50% unattended.

Here are my stats so far:

Month Data Sent (MB) Data Received (MB) Total (MB)
August, 2010 1357.56 38661.44 40019.00
July, 2010 1600.83 22811.58 24412.41
TOTAL 2958.39 61473.02 64431.41

Wow - MWEB uncapped 4MB ADSL really has dived in service, its 25 hours, still have 700MB on a 3.5GB file from paid newsgroups.

If this is the way its going to go - I'm going to bypass shaping and get myself kicked - rather use as much as I can, considering this means my average speed is 42Kb/s - less than 10% of line speed over 25 hours.

I don't even get these speeds.

Im still happy with my MWEB 384 uncapped.
Doing anything from 30-50GB per month.
HTTP download always full speed.
Torrents and NZB half speed during the day most of the time.. not important because im at work... but I do VPN into home PC to check things out.
Browsing and downloading after hours is good.

Def worth R219 per month :D Thanks MWEB !
