MWEB Uncapped Subscribers Feedback

I just made the switch to MWEB uncapped 384k a few days back and I have to say Im impressed,

on Torrents I managed to hit 44KB something that has not happened for the past 6 months with Axxess.

Then downloading a book from audible took 19 minutes...I can actually listen to it on the way to pta now, with axxess

I either had to download the audiobook the day before or wait from 9am till 9pm to get the book since it keeps getting cut off and dl speed is at 1.1 max during the day.

Thank you MWEB!

OK, let's have a little test.
Name a torrent and we'll
compare speeds now.

44Kb on a torrent? Palees ...

We're working on this Veneficus :) if I could get a few sound offs on what games people are currently playing and what their experience is, particularly when it comes to issues like downloading maps and in game content/patch delivery of any sort. We are raising some questions around this with a supplier and I want to make sure we have a comprehensive picture of the current issues.

as before, gaming on NFS World online. Last night, repeat of prevoius issue. Had a 69meg patch file prelaunch. Could only do 30meg and bombing out. Switched to Telkom and downloaded fine. Switched back to gaming thereafter on mweb. no problems. If I didn't have a second telkom acc. , I would have been screwed.

edit: bombing out download only says"check internet connection" . no log file AFAIK.

44KB for a torrent on 384k is pretty decent actually considering max speed is theoretically 48KB.

I've never seen 44 on Mweb.

I've asked Itchyfor a comparative test.
Let's see if he comes back for the
challenge.

Gingerbeer I would like to issue you with a challenge - give us your customer details and give us the opportunity to provide you with technical support - seems fair doesn't it? Everytime we raise the issue you avoid it, yet you are constantly vocal about the quality of the service. Perhaps you would like to clarify why that is the case?

Hi auriga, I've added NFS World to the list we are compiling from your feedback on the weekend.

I know this is going to make me sound like a kiss ass but MWEB thank you for the brilliant product.

Going in I had a pretty good idea what to expect, and to be fair for R539 I didn't expect very much. The shaping you guys do works perfectly, it makes sure that the downloads don't degrade the service for regularly used protocols and frankly I don't mind waiting for stuff from torrents or Hotfile.

Is there no way you guys could develop more in house content, you have a large enough client base that gaming servers would make sense and should reduce ping to those games. A second option would be to prioritize the existing gaming servers. Is this possible? If teeny tiny little IBurst can host game servers why can't you?

But on everything else, thank you very much!!!

hmm... hey mweb opz. um.. just curious whether the latency increase was gonna be solved or not?.. it's been quite a while since i last spoke to you and gave you my account details and nothing really came of it.. or are we mweb uncapped users indefinitely doomed to having seperate accounts for gaming and downloading?..

Shayd Thanks for the great feedback and suggestions. Getting our IPC network off the ground and changing the face of the Internet in South Africa with affordable uncapped services has been keeping us pretty busy.

Right now our focus is on building on these achievments and strengthening the network, but that doesn't mean that we don't have some longer term plans that have me pretty excited lined up.
I'd honestly love to share a bit more ,but there are colleagues of mine who would not be happy with me for spoiling their surprises so all I can say for now is watch this space :)

We are looking very seriously at ways to improve on the gaming experience on the shaped products, please hang in there and we'll update you here once we have some solutions.

Kind Regards

sounds promising... but at the same time... really wish more servers were hosted here... mmo's like aion, WoW, guild wars etc.. if they were, these international latency issues wouldn't really affect anybody except for the international VoIP users..

*hint hint* :P

I see Megaupload has been added to the shaped servers list....

Correct Sandman. During the lengthy discussions around the enforcement of our AUP several members of the community mentioned that they felt we should be more proactive in shaping these services and take the pressure of our customers to ensure that they are not inadvertantly unshaping themselves.

We heard this feedback and took it seriously.

In light of this we will be making a concerted effort to keep the signatures on our traffic managers as up to date as possible with all known services of this type. We can't promise you that it will be 100% foolproof, new services are springing up all the time, however as we do have a warning system in place now this should not be a problem. If someone is warned for using a bulk download service they thought was covered by the shaping and they are open with us about what was being used and willing to assist us with the neccesary server details we will make every effort to adjust the shaping policy to accomodate the service so that you can continue to use it without risk.

Kind Regards

Wait... It's against policy to use bulk download services?... Heavy.

That would be awesome - I know that more than one attempt has been made over the years to try and get Blizzard to establish a presence in SA, but so far without luck. Sadly I think it comes down to a question of economies of scale with them and they don't feel that there is enough of a potential client base in Southern Africa to warrant the investment in infrastructure.

That's so terribly thoughtful of you, thank you so very very much....!!!!

well to be honest in terms of the local hosting issue, there are enough people within africa to warrant an african server at least?... regardless whether it be in central africa or here?... a petition for gamers to show that they play these kinds of games in south africa would likely result in tens of thousands of people.. most of them are just playing on cracked/private servers because of the latency issue...

P.S. sandmanm34 doesn't seem to be pleased with your prevention of users "unintentionally" unshaping themselves..... can't imagine why...

Wait... It's against policy to use bulk download services?... Heavy.

darxx all Peer to Peer type activities are deprioritized (shaped) on the shaped products to ensure that core Internet activities get the best experience possible.

Services that rely on tunneling over SSL, or VPN effectively bypass the network shaping, by 'spoofing' themselves onto high priority unshaped protocols.

Shaping these protocols would provide a negative experience for the majority of our customers as it would impact on people doing things like Internet banking, or connecting to the office on a VPN. These services therefore have to be identified and shaped individually.

So no using one of these services is in itself, not in contravention of the AUP, but using one which is not shaped to the extent that it raises a red flag with our abuse team will get you a warning and a request to explain your activity and modify your behaviour.

Kind Regards
