I am on a 4mb line with mweb 4mb uncapped, syncing at 7mb and im not even getting 1mb locally!!

MWEB Ops: What is going on--every morning I get up--and this is the deal--slow as hell today. See my previous posts as well on this thread. Common, let us a good stint of speed for a decent time period. Just yesterday, I was singing praises to my wife about the MWEB download speeds (I was getting close to 400K downloading Ubuntu Daily Image CD 700MB iso--justifying why we need a fastest Telkom speed ;-) ) now this> At least tell us that things are under construction and all will be fine on x date/time. Please note I have even asked telkom tech to come on site to resolve line interference and reset my line so it links to my exchange at full line speed.

DownStream Connection Speed 4096 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 512 kbps

BTW I am only 1km from my fibre-optic link (last mile is copper), and i have confirmation from telkom that all is good on their side.

I'm assuming that this is your ping

206.757ms

Looking at the repeating patern of 205,206,207 I'm gonna assume that that is a copy paste issue and that the 757ms is the actual ping BUT either way, be it 206ms or 757ms , thats a ridiculously high ping to your own router. I'm on a wi-fi connections and my ping is 1ms or less. I think your routers got a issue.

What specifically seems to be the problem exactly?

MWEB!

Constant disconnecting... the most ridiculous shaping i've ever come across in my life, like to the point where my download drops to 0k, and spikes to a maximum of 1k/s ... all of this on a 4 meg uncapped.

I am happy to be shaped to hell during the day, but i cannot handle NOT maintainting a connection and at least getting 150k/s AFTERHOURS.

I've had telkom check my line etc, everything is 100%.

Are the MWeb uncapped accounts on contract? My MWeb uncapped is month to month. Maybe the unhappy users should move to other providers? :D

That is a decimal point. I have checked my router, reset, and rebooted. Still the same.

Smiley I would have to agree there - pinging 250ms to your router is definitely not a good thing, also there is a massive spike on the 2nd hop which is a clear indication of an exchange related issue. Your line may be perfect, but we need Telkom to check the utilization on your DSLAM and the backhaul links. Is your line with us, or with Telkom?

Also note that it seems from your speedtest that you are currently on the @mweb realm using SAIX wholesale bandwidth, which is a further indication that the problems you're having don't stem from the MWEB network.

If you need any assistance with getting Telkom to look at the congestion I would suggest you PM MWEB Operations on Monday and the team can follow up on this for you.

Will, Are you recommending I move back to MWEB's @dslweb? I have tried both, @dslmweb has a longer ping (150ms vs. 25ms on SAIX). I have noticed that speed are a bot better now.

My line is with Telkom. I will PM MWEB Ops on Monday as see where this gets me.

Thanks for replying.

Hi Smiley, no apologies if I wasn't clear there, although it will be irrelevant in a few weeks time when our network upgrades are done and we discontinue the SAIX load balancing.

What I was trying to point out is that your problems seem to be ISP independent as they are happening on the last mile portion of your network.

That 250ms to your router is really bothering me though so perhaps you should focus on fixing that first and then see how the rest looks once it's correct. Check your local leads, POTS filters and so forth - also do a continuous ping to your router and check if there is any spiking, or packet loss. Look at processes and netstats on all your machines, maybe you have a rogue process somewhere thats eating up your bandwidth. If none of that helps see if you can borrow a router from someone to see if that needs replacing.

Hi Gushesh, please PM your contact details to me and I'll get some to contact you to troubleshoot.

Hi BigBear

I'm not sure what would have caused that. We had some latency on the network this morning, but that's been resolved now, so please let me know if you're still having a problem.

For future reference it would help a lot more if you posted something like a tracert result if you think you might be having a problem - speedtests can be quite subjective and I've seen the results fluctuate significantly over a matter of minutes - also they don't really give us any clues about where the problem might be if there is one :)

Thanks

I can't see anything wrong with that trace Necuno, except possibly some congestion on hop 10 (notice how it spikes to 533). I think we might be able to put this one on ID's doorstep. I got the same results and for comparison kicked off an unmanaged download of an ubuntu iso and it's going at full speed. Are you having any issues currently other than trying to retrieve this file?

seems problem fixed itself now as speeds are restored
