Oh, you are using news servers for file sharing? Sorry, they were not designed for that so your performance will be very poor. Try torrents instead.

Still trolling? Haven't you realised no one is interested in your opinion on newsgroups.

Well they are clearly concerned about their performance on said servers. I am merely giving them the reason behind it. I might also add that its not just my special little rouxenator-troll-munition opinion, it is shared by many others including the guys from MWEB. But that's not going to bother you since you are going to a new ISP at the end of the month. Remember to send us a post card on how your performance is then.

Amazing how the ISP that users are having issues with blames the technology

Its a pity newsgroups don't function any-more on connections greater than dial-up - A lot of paid for newsgroup companies are going to go under because of this new revelation. Astraweb, Giganews, etc - I mean just look at this list of companies which are going down because you and MWEB say so http://www.newsgroupreviews.com/usenet-providers.html - its a real pity - because some of them are new too - launced in 2010 - doomed to fail.

Yes, in a way it is sad to see them go - I'll agree with you on that.

But its just like gopher. WWW killed gopher because it was easier to use and more efficient. Same can be said for BBS that got killed by the internet. With regards to news server, no offense, but they have had their time so its time to go. Forums took away the initial need for news servers (sharing news on topics) and as for file sharing, it is the worst possible way to do file sharing.

That's technology for you...

Demise? Never - hey we still have gopher support in FireFox :p But for file sharing I think (hope) they will show a decline. Still outside SA there are a couple of them that make good money from paid subscribers that connect to them with their own client software (usenext) and as long as they sell it as an easier-than-torrents solution people will buy it.

Ill stick to my anonymity ,thank you.

Bit torrent is currently the biggest target for the anti piracy movement, it doesnt take much for them to track you down, even if you are on a "private tracker" all they do is serve a court order for the user database of any "private tracker" that hosts torrents and they have all they need to track you down, link you to the private torrents on the site and what you downloaded/uploaded, let alone the fact that SAFACT has been eyeballing local torrent hosts for a while now ...

Usenet might be a old protocal that wasn't designed for what its used for today, but the same can be said for the internet as a whole it was never intended for what we use it for today, and both work perfectly fine.

PS even though Im using usenet I only use it for the latest linux distros , and Im sure you use torrents for the same.

lol dude give it up, there is a big wide world out there which does not agree with you in any way or form. You should do less torrenting and start reading the news, you might learn something :p

:D Now that is a laugh and a half. You are much less anonymous on a news server - that has been debunked long time ago.

But as MFour pointed out, no one is interested in how wrong news servers for file sharing is and I guess that's fair enough. Just don't come complaining when they are not performing well because you have been warned.

Actually on a shaped capped account they run at my full line speed, but on a shaped capped account, well yes, it is shaped just as the names suggests, so it is what it is.

Mind enlightening me with a proper source not just an opinion?

The way the track you down on torrents is they look for torrents with illegal files and then they see what seeders/peers they can download it from. These seeders/peers and then traced and their ISP/upstream providers are notified and so the message eventually gets to you.

On news servers its really easy, you just need to look at who is logged on (on paid servers they have even more details on you) and then see what that user is downloading. Every one downloading illegal content is traced and notified. No looking for seeders or peers on illegal content, just listing ALL user downloading it.

I think I posted a link saying newservers are much safer for privacy.... can you please post a single case of that happening with newsgroups? I can post a few with torrents.

this is silly

notwithstanding issues wrt isp/shaping/linespeed, you cannot argue with the fact that premium news is faster and more stable than torrents
usenet also wins on safety and privacy in general, if you contest this fact you ill informed.

The only clear advantage torrents hold is easy access to relatively obscure/specialist content through a wide variety of private trackers.

It's far easier to set up Honeypot torrents on Public trackers and see what IP addresses are grabbing it than getting a private USENet server admin to hand over their server logs. Even public USENet server logs would be more challenging than directly harvesting IPs from Torrents which can be done with NO interaction from the server providers

You just defeated your own argument, the anti piracy goons generally go after the uploader or seed

for a pirated file, with usenet one does not upload....

thats why on the rare occasion they set their sights on usenet they tackle index sights or

the usenet provider itself, trying to go after individual guys downloading pirated files on usenet is silly

and a complete non starter, THATS WHY THEY DONT EVEN TRY.

Just a tip - you're arguing this with a brick wall.

Rouxenator is a hardcore fanboy - only what he uses is correct, and the only way of doing things, anything else is useless ,i.e. Opel, torrents, MWEB, etc. - bet he even has the best console.
