I tried, I was not completely unhappy, but to tell me I used 95g and therefore should be happy and shut up is not on. Simply said it converted me from from the biggest defender to be the biggest hater! So like Telkom they are!

hehe, megasXLR, i mailed afrihost and asked the CEO what should be a safe limit to stay under if i dont wanna get throttled, he replied 60gb, then BAM! that same weekend i was throttled after 17gb, didnt finish all my STEAM downloads :(

Hi MWEB Guy,

My usage is high this month. 250GB+ the last time I checked (before I started this large HTTP download).

But yeah, considering that we've been told that usage is not a factor, and considering that the download that you see in my graphs is a simple HTTP (port 80) download, I sincerely hope that this doesn't turn out to be a result of my usage.

Besides, that still doesn't explain why my two friends in Cape Town who are ALSO sitting on 250GB+ this month are enjoying full speeds as I type this.

Edit: Yet another friend, this time based in Glenwood, Durban. Same experience as me. His usage is 50GB. I'm convinced this isn't usage-based, but rather routing-based, and the various bandwidth-shaping that goes with those different routes.

Hi StNick I got your PM thanks - If you'd like to drop me your preferred contact number I'd much prefer to just have a voice chat than try and back and forth via PM's. For those wanting to understand why the usage question was asked it's quite simple. If you're primarliy using your shaped account for p2p and you are a heavy downloader who speed watches their account there are going to be times when you will become frustrated by the service. This is something that has been discussed extensively here and our recommendation has always been to consider your 'haul' over the longer term rather than what speed your torrents, etc are doing right this instant.
For anyone who wants constant high speed p2p transfers the option is always there to look at moving to an unshaped service.

So if MWEB Guy happened to enquire about your usage all that he's trying to establish is how much you've actually achieved in p2p related activities over a longer period, vs the speeds you are currently complaining about.

We do not throttle individual accounts based on usage and it would in fact require a complete redesign of the way that we currently provision the user accounts and a fair amount of development work to even implement this functionality.

@Will. The contention ratios we have are bad enough as it is. Was it really such a good idea giving 1Mb/s for R299? Why not keep 512 for those that can't sync at 1MB/s.

Thank you for proving my earlier post, mweb people are the ones that have ten helpings of food at a buffet and then complain when it runs out...

Erm heh? Are you on drugs or something? If I want to do 10GB or 200GB on my mweb account I will damned as hell do so, thats what uncapped stands for . Why not use your real MyBB name?

@Unhappy438 what about youtube, online gaming, Skype? Am I supposed to tell my one friend I cant speak longer than 5 minutes on skype otherwise Unhappy438 will call me greedy for it.

Nice, speeds dropped again now. Downloading Ubuntu at 4.6kB/s
I knew the past 2 days that I actually got full speeds wouldn't last.

Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

Thanks for that, this clears it up.

Nonetheless, something is wrong at the moment. I am not a speed watcher and looking at my usage over the whole month I am very happy too. I have said this numerous times and this is also the reason I have recommened mweb to quite a few people. My problem (like many other people here too) is that for the past week or so things have been rediculously slow. International http is below 2Mbit (on a 4Mbit line) and it is impossible to download any file at all. I can't even seem to be able to download a driver from ATI's website, leave alone a custom ROM for my phone from a filehost. The connection starts at 30kb/s and then drops to next to zero until it breaks off. You can't expect us to get up in the middle of the night when the internet is fine to download these things.

Would you then categorically state that HTTP = P2P, because my download is being throttled from NVidia's webservers.

Also, would you say that HTTP Streaming = P2P ? as this is being shaped to HELL at the moment.

I can live with the slower speed for now, but what gets me is when I phoned tech support yesterday and they put me through to someone higher up none of them knew about this issue and also when I told them about the 740 plus page on my broadband they instructed me to phone telkom and have my line checked. lol

What contribution does congestion at the local exchange and/or congestion on the local backhaul contribute to the slow performance many users are reporting? If MWEB is sitting with a 10 meter diameter pipe and a megawatt pump connected directly into the ocean, and I'm sitting with a 1 meter diameter pipe at home ready and waiting, but Telkom/the exchange/the backhaul/the IPC/whatever is a congested straw, I guess I'm not gonna get very much water through.

Well this could only get worse on 1 June, they're doubling everyone's speed on 512kb for free. Hope you guys have adequate bandwidth for this, not just more shaping.

That said I still easily get my 4mb line maxxed from a single rapidshare thread or multiple mediafire threads.

Well, any concerns that I may have had about whether this problem was account-related rather than location-related have now been put to rest.

I have just dialed up with a friend in Cape Town's account... He is experiencing absolutely no shaping / throttling on his end, and even his usage is almost identical to mine.

Result: Absolutely no difference when compared to my own account. When dialed up from Durban, both accounts are severely borked. So that settles it then; the throttling has nothing to do with usage or the account itself. So unless anyone else can explain it, it seems pretty obvious to me that the difference here is that Cape Town users are subject to different bandwidth-shaping / throttling than DBN/JHB/???.

Can anyone please explain to me why World of Warcraft with a proxy is still lagging horribly? Is it classified as p2p? Surely not. Its getting really frustrating not being able to play WoW on my mweb uncapped account. Please let me know whats happening?

If we all took that approach there would be no quality internet left, its called uncapped shaped internet for a reason. This is also the only MyBB account that i have.

And that's why we go and get UNSHAPED, UNCAPPED its not free it costs money.

You want quality internet go over seas and visit Hong Kong or the UK.

And yes my UNSHAPED is downloading at 16.7 at 16:30 local bandwidth.
