My Beloved Auris

I got 3 opinions on a reconditioned gearbox already.
Toyota: 25k
Disa Motors: 24k

Mayfair: not sure what they are doing but it will be 16k

Quote:
Parts to rebuild unit - 8200 ex. vat
CV Shaft Repair - 1342 ex. vat

Labour:
Oil 75W80 & consumables - 660 ex. vat
Labour strip and assemble - 2200 ex. vat
Labour remove and replace gearbox - 2200 ex. vat

Get a used one as per pitpoodle's suggestion.

I meant the diagnosis, all the other quotes are just for the reconditioning of the gearbox, what about a different mechanic taking a look at the car and coming to their own conclusion about the problem, I know it will be an extra costs for strip and assembly.

But since you say you did not feel anything wrong with the car concerning gear changes except for the sound, don't you feel you need to make sure that you have R16k problem?

@OP: And this ticking happens only in gear? What about coasting in neutral and rev it a bit?

Yeah I did that. When in neutral, and when revving, no sound.
But whenever, in whatever gear, the ticking starts.

I would try and find a Toyota enthusiast forum or facebook group and ask advice there, even if it is just the name of a trusted and reliable independent mechanic that can give you a second opinion.

I would also google Mayfair as well. I read a rant on 2 forums about them relating to the repair and subsequent hijacking of a Ford dealer customers Wildtrak which had gone there for some gearbox work. They have dusted their hands of the matter and 5 months later the customer has no car and no compensation for a vehicle hijacked whilst in their care.

The car is in a state where I don't think I should drive it anymore.
It is very loud and... I fear that something bad will happen if I decide to drive home with it.

Buy a second hand gearbox. Buy a case of bears, fit new gearbox on a Saturday morning. WIN! Probably at most R 5 000. If that box turns out to be a dud (which I very highly doubt) you lost R 5k.

Or, do you not get companies that refurb gearboxes like they do with alternators and turbo's?

So it already costs 4400 ex. vat to strip the gearbox and see what is wrong with it, and put it back.

Labour strip and assemble - 2200 ex. vat
Labour remove and replace gearbox - 2200 ex. vat

I am thinking that, if I were to buy a 2nd hand gearbox, and pay for the labour, I would more or less break even and come to the same expense at the end of the day?

I always services it on time.

I am not sure how these teeth broke, I don't remember grinding my gears.

Did you ever had to push start your car with a flat battery? <-- Doing this in 1st is the best way the break your gearbox.

Fitting a gearbox is piss easy. If you can't do it yourself I'm sure a friend can. And then you can sell your old box for scrap.

Nope, I've looked after my car over the years, perfectly.
Never needed to push or anything.

I am quite stumped that this would happen to a Toyota Gearbox though. This thing was supposed to last forever.

Toyota owners have a misconception about toyota quality. years ago maybe when Toyota manufactured in house.

Today its all about cutting costs, and thus we find globalisation. Toyota assembles a car from the cheapest parts quoted and ordered from around the world.
Electronics Bosch
harnesses from whma
most part are stamped by 2 big companies in he world for most manufactures
Toyota gets gearboxes from a few suppliers such as Aisin. Most of the time not even a Toyota design.

Ok so the only way to assess your box is to remove. Have you contacted rex gearbox and diff for a quote?

What I don't understand is the tick sound. I keep thinking it must be a cv , clutch or clutch fork. worn bearings will have a whine.
I would get a second opinion. If the box are to expensive get a second hand one. I am sure you can discuss options with a mechanic.

I recorded the sound of it a day before I took it to Mayfair.

I wish I can upload it to mybb though.

Nice series here showing how easy it is to do it yourself :)
