Had it in George one very cold and early morning and once you break on it there is nothing you can do. Car just kept on sliding until it stopped against a speedbump. But we're talking a couple of meters here.

I wonder if a bike will be able to make it through a patch of black ice unscathed should you lose traction. Don't think I'll be skilled enough to keep it up.
 
Hey guys,

So, for those in JHB, where do you get your tyres from? I will need a new rear soon, with fitment.
 
Bikers Warehouse - never used them for tyres before, but I reckon I'll consider them. There's also Linex Yamaha and Fourways Motorcycles

that happened to me on Corlett drive in peak hour traffic. it was after the highway going towards Luis Botha, there by the synagogue. I barely managed to stop at the robot. but I did end up stopping 100% in the stuff.
as I pulled away I had no traction still, and while riding home for the next 30km odd, going around any right hand turn I could feel the tyres loosing traction. eventually about 5KM from home I was able to finally turn right without the bike wanting to loose it. scariest ride of my life. the only reason I made it home without falling was because the front and rear had grip in different places. so as the front would loose the back would grip. and as the back would loose it the front would grip again.

this was before my first accident, so I was still very new to riding, had been on the road for a few months only at the time.

Such a scary ride when you can't trust your tyres. Literally all confidence gone. Eish. Glad you made it safely.

a few months later (after the repairs after I got rear ended) at the same robot my clutch cable snapped.
then a few months after that, again at the same robot, the pin that holds the gear shift in place, snapped.

that robot has not been good for me. glad I do not need to ride that route anymore.

I used Bike Tyre Warehouse in Midrand. The owner Bruce, is a nomad with Crusaders. Very accomodating and brilliant service

How's the repairs to your steed coming along. Where you able to make some progress?
 
I've been having these recurring urges... Like I really want to own a VTR1000 SP2... Not that I can find any available (or can afford it right now if I did...)
Anyone here ever own(ed) one of these bikes?

I have those urges too.

A very similar option would the old school Aprilia RSV 1000 Mille.
 
Mkay, so on tyres.

In my tyre size, I'm being offered Pirelli Sport Demons and Michelin Pilot Sport Radials.

Anyone have experience with these? Any recommendation between the two?

I can get the Michelins fitted for R965.
I can get the Pirelli fitted for R1495.

Not sure if there is R530 worth of awesomeness in the Pirellis though?
 
While I haven't any experience in either of those specific sets of rubber, I must say I'm a bit of a fan of Michelin. Huge fan of their Pilot Powers, and the Power Pures when those were available. I would probably go with Michelin, but I would suggest trying to find some online reviews of the tyres?
 
Don't know about the Sport Radials, but i have the michelin commander 2 tyres (front and back) - very nice road handling going into the bends, nice water displacement and the expected mileage is fairly high - up to 40 000km (so about 30 000km)

Can't comment on those ones particularly but I've found Pirellis aren't great road tyres as they often take forever to warm up and then don't stay that way.

Michelins on the other hand seem a bit more road biased.

Pirelli is always more expensive and I can't imagine there is R500's true value in there either.

On what bike is that? Never heard of those before.

Almost seem like an American version of the older Pilot Roads, but does seem like a standalone product line.

Aaah seems to be a cruiser specific tyre. That explains why it seemed so american.
