The more approved regulators a helmet passes is probably better so I'll definitely use that as a guideline

Edit: It's tricky as some helmets score 4 or 5 stars on ECE and DOT, yet 2 stars on SNELL. Others get 4 stars or more on SNELL, but 2 or at most 3 on the other two authorities. The ones that conform to all the standards are inevitably upwards of R7k locally.

My brain hurts now :(

But then you head down that slippery slope again - how much is enough when it comes to 'good protection'? Someone else may come along and say "Ho hum, that Shark is kuk, spend another R2000 and get an AGV" after which another will say "AGV is inferior, buy a Bell" - etc etc etc.

In an ideal world I would buy the top of the line helmet and be done with it but sadly financial constraints come into play and somewhere I have to draw the line and set a limit - which does unfortunately limit me to something below R3000 at the present time.

You buy the best you can afford (for safety related items). Set your limit and find the best fitting and thereafter best rated helmet that falls within that limit

Like car chairs for children, people with R1mil cars using who knows how old hand me down seats... That is certainly not the best they can afford

That’s because they can afford to spend 200k monthly over 5 years and therefore have nothing left for an outright cash purchase. :)

Don’t worry the oke who crashes with the DOT approved piss pot’s will hurt much more.

Ergo, DOT is meaningless.

What you meant to say was that they don’t use a seat at all...

And that very same person will look at me in disgust for riding a dangerous motorcycle, while I’m fully kitted and prepared for the worst.

Yeah. I think that was a fairly recent legislative change though wasn’t it?

Worse still is every time I see a Panigale it’s pretty much a fancy helmet and nothing else.

And then they are DOT, ECE and SNELL approved (or more) and you can enter the holy war of debates about which safety standard is better. ECE has more rigurous tests as opposed to DOT, DOT is American though so some American brands are never sent for ECE testing etc etc...

I have an HJC, but really love the Biltwell Gringo. I see Biltwell are not listed on that site? Are they just not tested or no good as protection?
 
Never ever heard of them so I’m going to guess the latter.

Or they are only available in America.

I was a bit disappointed in seeing how many known brands weren't listed on the site Hamster & SauRoNZA posted. There was another Australian site regarding the SNELL test that I checked out but they also had a very limited list to work from.

I'll continue to do some digging and see what I can come up with. If worst comes to the worst, I will hold off until a bit later when I have some more funds available. It's not like I am riding the bike anyway - I put 23km on it the past three years :p

But yeah I think they only list stuff for sale in the UK.

Check Snell’s own page maybe.
 
My personal opinion, don't consider pricing all that important. The most expensive helmets might not out perform the more budget friendly brands and styles.... Best check which brand you like, or fancy, and do some research into its safety related aspects. You might be surprised at what you find

There is also something to be said for a helmet that fits you correctly and comfortably being safer than one that is constantly distracting.

I got my first Shoei for a bargain because of an insurance claim and making a deal buying a lot of kit and it was an excellent move at the time.

Then when it came to buying again they were just stupidly expensive and I opted to risk the Shark Speed R instead.

What a mistake and a few months of suffering I eventually got Shark to refund it and then got the GT Air.

Couldn’t be happier.

Now I look at these BMW lids and ask myself if it’s worth the risk.

Everyone else raves about them, but I also know that I have a Shoei head by now.

Those GT Air lids are very good, I agree. My next helmet will be either that or the NXR...
 
I've got a BMW System 6 and a Shoei GT-Air. GT-Air wins hands down. The BMW is incredibly noisy and feels weak and brittle. You can't ride with the System's visor up without terrible wind noise because the air feeds into open gaps (2x1cm) funnelling the wind into your ears, you can't ride with the mouth vent open without terrible wind noise.

I'd be VERY reluctant to buy another BMW System helmet.
