Love my Arai X4 Tour...but they are expensive. Since I bought it it went from R8k to R12K now. Thats a lot of coin for a helmet but yeah, considering I use it every single day and it is a vital important piece of safety equipment I guess it is still worth considering esp since they make one of the safest helmets around.
Also seriously nice venting etc but its a bit noisy. I always ride with earplugs so...moot issue.

I'll probably consider taking a look atthe Bell MX-9 Adventure next time. Safe but a lot cheaper.

MIPS System and everything.

I looked at 9 helmets at the pricepoint of R5000 max at the time, I tried on the Arai as a joke almost.....fit me so well I took out the money. Still happy 4 years later.

Goggles are fun until you inevitably have a wasp fly in between the goggles and the helmet area, relentlessly stinging you until your face swells up like a beach ball if you are unlucky enough to be riding along a busy freeway at the time with no safe space to pull of.

Don't ask me how I know this.

That can happen with any helmet though.

If you ride with the visor open a lot, yip.

I have been zapped on the Adam's apple as well by a bee. I now wear a Buff/Balaclava thingamabob whenever I go riding no matter the temperature and weather. I haven't had any mishaps yet (touch wood)

Visor open or they can crawl in the bottom as well.

Most goggles I’ve seen fit pretty snugly to the helmet gap but I guess there will be some room for variation there.

Also been stung in the neck.

Couple of years ago had quite a drama on a road trip when a riding mate got stung and was highly allergic.

Ended up with ambulance in the middle of nowhere as he didn’t realise he had been stung and it got pretty hectic very quickly.

Agree the TX4 is the best in my opinion safety wise & very comfortable... I have had mine for about 3 years now, but now its a bit too loose. I've lost 10KG over the last few years, and when I was at an Arai tech talk, I was told I was using a size too big. And theres no way I'm shelling R11K on a new one. So I have ordered the GS Trophy Edition Helmet. Got it on special for R6999. Also about R8800 normally. I did a test ride with it (530km), one size smaller than my TX4. I might sell the TX4, its in perfect condition, no drops or scratches.

Just replace the internal padding with that of one size smaller.

I asked about that with the Arai agents when we did the tech talk... its a temporary solution. As soon as the foam softens you are left with the same problem. Also the shells are different sizes.

There are usually 2 shell sizes in which they then vary the padding/foam in order to get ±6 total sizes. Some helmets do have 3 shell sizes but even then padding/foam is needed to cover the whole range. Doesn't help of course if you're on the boundary of shell sizes.

I'm going to mail them ... see what they say...

Seems I am mistaken - that helmet may have 5 shell sizes for the 6 total sizes, and Arai claim they share a maximum of 2 final sizes per shell on any of their helmets. Probably a big driver of the price.

Yeah often the external shell is bigger but the internal only marginally so.

Temporary lasted me a good couple years.

When I get a gap, I'll take my TX4 to Perry Bikes in Durbs. See what a service costs and replacing the inner pads costs. If its too much then I'll just sell the helmet as is for a reasonable price.

Yeah I have no idea what they’ll shaft you for these days.

But back in the day cost me like R250 or something to replace the inners on my Premier.

I've used Shark helmets for the last 10 years or so, been very happy with both the quality & after-sales service.

The agents are Langstons, based in Midrand. I had a open/close mechanism on the chin break after accidentally dropping the helmet. Popped in to Langstons, mechanism replaced & repaired FOC, helmet was also inspected (though not x-rayed) cleaned, new foam inserts & new visor all provided FOC.

Whole exercise took half an hour, was an absolute pleasure.

3 times in 3 rides offroad now. Twice in the neck one on the cheek.
Good thing came out of it though...I'm supposed to be highly allergic. First 2 times i was stressing. Not much happened. Last time i asked a fellow rider to just take the knife and scrape it off. :D

@SirFook'nG What size are you?

I recon Bell or Caberg helmets are some of the best value for money you can get regarding safety at this stage.

My offroad Helmet is an EVS T5 Helmet.Got it after I shattered my Fox...Still wondered if I had my Arai on if I would have suffered a concussion and memory loss. It's really nice and light and came with good reviews online they make a series EVS Venture helmets. Should be well priced and a few local agents.
