I am probably going to get some earplugs before I do any long distance stuff, but for me, I wouldn't use earphones. Not yet, anyway.

Highway speeds can get noisy. I do town only atm and never wear anything but the helmet. Hearing a car locking brakes and sliding behind you (I've got a video of that somewhere) is quite important.

Note that a waterproof inner liner sound good in theory but does not really work in practice especially if you are talking extended periods in rain.

My in-ears rattle themselves loose when riding when I've used them to listen to my GPS. If I had suitable earphones, I'd probably use them for music, but would obviously not want to override hooters/shouting, and on long-distance trips, I think ear plugs are a safer option both in terms of your awareness as well as potential noise damage.
 
How new rider friendly would you rate a Harley-Davidson 750 Street or 883 Sportster?

Well yeah the outer needs to be.

But as you say they get wet and stay wet.

Mine never bleeds through though.

They never stay in.

And yeah you need ear plugs. For anything highway speed.

I use earplugs with my Bluetooth headset.

Depends on the rider.

The 750 should be better as I recall it's lighter.

Personally I wouldn't do it, especially not if the intention is to commute.

Yea for touring maybe.

But then I'm of the opinion getting off the bike and stretching a bit and taking a breather is better for you than just keeping at it and drinking on the go.

A camelback has proven a life safer but that was riding from Kimberley to Pretoria in 42 degree heat.
 
I've used my earphones once when going home after work. Only in the one ear so not to block out ambient sounds of traffic. When travelling at highway speed, wind noise is louder than the music, but not overpowering. Come to think of it, my HJC helmet doesn't create too much wind noise, there isn't much difference between 80kmh and 130kmh...

It's not perceptible.

You WILL have hearing damage without ear plugs.

It's a simple fact.

No helmet will change that.

I'll have to check again, but riding back from Honda yesterday on the highway my thinking was "jeez, I can hardly hear the bike" and i was doing between 140-160
