Yesterday morning I saw a dude, and a chick, on a scooter. Open face helmets, she was damn hot... but she must've had the most depressing, sad, face on I've ever seen.... I could read her thoughts... "why did i decide to marry this poephol" :D :D

In other news... SO and I took a mates Vespa out for a ride yesterday.
 
It's usually the sprockets that get the short end of the stick, not the chain itself, and I think it may have more to do with improper chain tension than dirt itself, although I do think dirt plays a role.

Let me add to my earlier post.

The STR also had its original sprockets on.

I reckon it's got everything to do with how you lay the power down, which indirectly relates to the type of engine as well.
 
Private or dealer?

Private - approach the previous owner as find out if he knew about the crack. If not. Raise the matter. And then hope he gives some cash back to have it repaired.
Dealer - Return and refund.

Not to state the obvious - but that crack isn't hidden. Your mate didn't check what he was buying properly. Rule 1 when buying anything. Hope it doesn't become school fees for him.

Private sell. It's a tough situation. He claims the bike must have been like that, but it does seem like something that would be quite visible when inspecting a bike before purchase. That fact that it happened in the first place is quite alarming though. Repairing that would be quite a large job.

Have owned a Triumph and socialized with many owners. Have only ever head of one frame cracking without outside influence. And even that on a tourer that had quite a few kilo's of gravel roads under its belt. The repair itself is easy. Its the labor involved in getting all the bits and farkles off the scoot so that it can be welded properly.

IMO Inspection of the crack with a decent illuminated jewelers loupe will show you if the crack is old or new I would think. If its new - then your mate can claim from insurance. If its old - he must approach the seller and negotiate to get some of his cash back to offset the repair and then still go the insurance route.
 
Shoe I can't say I would have easily spotted that.

Even with a thorough investigation.

Will re welding the alloy not weaken it? Will it be safe enough for the stresses that it goes through?

If its done through a reputable shop the new welds will be stronger than the steel around it. Taking it to some bloke with a stick welder in his dads garage isnt going to cut it.
