I found this on my Facebook feed in regards to the front fork issue.

As part of a precautionary measure, BMW Motorrad South Africa is carrying out a service campaign to check the fixed fork tubes of the front forks of all the BMW R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure models produced between the periods November 2013 to June 2017. In South Africa 6 100 motorcycles are affected.

If you adjust the front brake lever lower then it rubs against (presumably) the TPS cable.

It is pointless. It is nothing more than a feel good exercise - to make the client feel good.

Post above yours refers - bike was in for a full service 3 days before the stanchion went pop.

Stanchions that have been replaced as "faulty" have subsequently failed. So WTF is the point of inspecting, when even if they decide to replace (will not happen as it costs $$) they are simply replacing with the same faulty part.

There is a press fit collar to go on the stanchion, they have only managed enough at the production level at this point for any new model being sold. There are apparently new stanchions with the press fit collar in production already, when they are ready it appears that there will be a proper recall on all LC GS's to have them replaced. The current initiative is a preemptive measure to try ensure faulty stanchions are removed immediately while we wait for a full fix. That's my understanding.
 
^^ They are checking the stanchions. if no movement has occurred they fit a new bush.

If movement/damage has occurred they replace & fit a new bush.

Basically they are trying to create a tighter fit as the original press fit was not good enough.

Freaking joke - pay R250k for a Geen Sand Asseblief & then it needs extra bushes to solve a potentially fatal flaw. :erm:

Presumably this only applies to the telelever based GS?

So would then surely affect the K series as well?
 
So I have learned some interesting details about the person in Sutherland... From someone who has ridden with him for many years... Seems he is very accident prone and widely regarding as a poor rider :whistle:
edit: oh, and he was riding with the fast group that day too

What is a freakin joke is people who probably know less than nothing giving their 2c about engineering and what will work and what will not. For instance, I have personally seen forks bent to almost form 90° angle from an accident... and yet the stanchions held firm, forks were still held firmly in place... Shouldn't they have popped out instantly giving the huge impact and how flimsy the design is according to keyboard warriors?
 
Only for the K series, 2013 - 2017. Some 6100 of them in South Africa alone!

Well there is at least one less they have to do, dad popped in yesterday and has had the fix installed. I'm patiently waiting for rev2 of the LC, too many little things I don't like about the current one. That and I'm dirt poor at the moment :p
 
At least the Honda's don't have these issues :p

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 ST1300PA, 2014-2015 CB500, CBR500, CRF250L, CBR650, CTX700, NSS300, VT750, VT1300, 2015 CB300F, CBR300, CBR600, and 2014-2016 NC700 motorcycles. In the affected motorcycles, sealant may have been incorrectly applied to the starter relay switch, and as a result, the electrical system may have a loss of power.

One of the first results on google... What I don't like is many companies (cars and bikes) seem to do recalls by region, and not worldwide. Oh, and the big Honda bikes also suffer from the infamous faulty Takata airbags...

How about this one (Ducati)...
WHAT COULD HAPPEN: If the rear shock absorber detaches from the swingarm, the motorcycle's handling would be affected, increasing the risk of a crash.

The issue is that the stanchions work their way loose from a press fit, and eventually "fall out". No bending involved.

Who said it was a flimsy design, I must have missed that? Gooi a Quote 'seblief?

Love a pick of those nearly 90 degree bent forks that haven't broken please?

And you really think that if they simply fall out they wouldn't get pulled out during such an event? Come on...

Highway, middle lane, no power, nowhere to go?
Overtaking, lose power, nowhere to go?
Make a right turn at an intersection, lose power, pray the oncoming car stops in time?
etc
 
Sudden weight distribution change while cornering under constant throttle may pose a serious problem.
