MyBroadband to change its article comments section

MacRumors has the best integration of article comments and forum discussion I've ever seen. The only discussion is in the forum thread, and comments cannot be made on the article page as far as I'm aware. The article comments section is simply a page of the best comments from the forum discussion, as determined by likes/votes.

Have a look:

So people who point out the clickbait articles will not have their comments shown? Well done MyBB! That is how you show them... /s

Exactly! I always point out clickbait articles in the Discus comments, as well as recycled articles and political articles that has fockall to do with Tech, but I already see my profile is marked so that every time I leave a comment it must be moderated first, meaning that MyBB cannot take any criticism at all.

Well done MyBB, shooting yourself in the foot. Soon this will happen to the forums as well and then you'll die out just like many other tech forums and news sites.

Like articles that are from the Government section that have comments disabled automatically.
That really says something.

This article alone has over 200 comments so good luck. That's assuming they'll even be read. And what's with the reporting in the third person? Oh wait, was probably asked in the article comments.

According to the article, this is being done to discourage trolls from posting comments.
The reasoning was a little difficult to digest. So I asked about it. My deleted comments below. If those comments make me a troll then I strongly question my sanity haha.

Interesting. In the article, "Vodacom Please Call Me - The Truth". A commentor threatened to report mybroadband to the media Ombudsman due to dodgy reporting.
Some time later, the article was updated with info about the the actual case, you know, facts.
At that point, I suppose sufficient damage had been done.
@ mybroadband, was this the motivation for changing the comments?
Can you give us some examples of the trolling? Your reasoning for these changes is so vague.
If you're doing this to protect yourselves then simply say so.
Anyhow, if this turns into trolling = any views expressed that we don't like or challenges us, then people just won't bother visiting the site anymore.
Circle-jerks and herd thinking silos are my least favourite things on the internet.
Have to say I'm a bit surprised, this isn't the sort of decision to be made lightly.
The internet is a fickle place, amazing web based companies have crumbled into dust for less.
Good luck to you nybroadband. See you guys on the other side.

Came here to upvote you cause of your username.
Take ur filthy upvote and be away with yee.

It's probably better to just disable the comments section, after all if you remove the following types of posts from comment sections in today's internet...
  • Trolls
  • Haters
  • Uninformed
  • Racists
  • SJW's (I guess that covers a few that I've listed above)
Then you have the precious few left.

Anyone willing to contribute something meaningful to a post is more likely to do it in a forum than a comment.
It's way more easy to quickly post something negative and forget about than to actually engage with a community.

I do truly hope constructive criticisms over posts do not get deleted no matter how bad it may make the author look because you do get some really poorly researched articles.

I hoped too.
I complemented someones username, as a stand-alone comment. Mybroadband wanted no trace of me in the comments section. Thus it got deleted. It looked as though my upvotes were rolled back as well.
Fun times eh?

Our plan is definitely not to delete critical comments. As long as the comments are valuable and insightful, they will be approved. In fact, we welcome these comments.

The problem is mainly with trolls and users who simply come in to make some silly, usually negative, remark. These comments are of no value and harms discussions rather than improve them.

(and users who simply come in to make some silly, usually negative, remark.)
Ah, you mean like a critical opinion?
Even when those are annoying, isn't the social norm that people are entitled to them?

It's good but it depends what comments will be blocked. What makes this whole country great is that you can publicly voice your disapproval.

Example if mybb post Best ISP or Mobile network there are people that will comment fake or fraud ect those imo might not add value but gives mybb or others opportunity to respond and creates dialogue which nice.

I fear that this moderation will turn mybb into a list of
MYBB is best
I love mybb
My no1 site

ect comments.

Your fears are warranted.
Mybroadbands actions reveal their intentions.

Sounds like North Korea :p

I don't know why there isn't just a way to link the forum up to the comments section so these threads are teh comments.

  • All comments will go into a moderation queue and valuable comments will be approved and published.
  • Users who regularly make insightful comments will become “Trusted”, and their comments will always display immediately. They will bypass the moderation queue.
So if your comment does not fit the narrative of mybb and their advertisers you are schit out of luck. If you lick ass the whole time you will become a trusted ass licker.

Your entire approach to this is fscking revolting to say the least.

Yeah it's a load of crap basically. But at the end of the day it's a privately owned forum and they can do as they want.

Best thing to do is to stop contributing, without the members it's nothing.
