New iBurst Wireless pricing revealed

Why is it that myBB always posts these kind of awesome news articles around midnight just when I am about to go to sleep?

So that we can post our thought provoking replies and everyone else gets to read them first thing in the morning...:D

iBurst finally now offer true value, and can compete favourably with ADSL, but only if you are in a good coverage region, and don't have signal issues.

Compared with ADSL, you don't need to pay monthly voice line rental (R151), or the ADSL access portion (R326 for 512kbps). But you still need to pay the monthly subscription, which works out to be quite a bit cheaper than ADSL.

However, iBurst still can't compete with Afrihost's per GB data pricing of R29 per GB. So for high usage accounts of 15-20GB+, ADSL is still cheaper. However, you are limited to a 1mbps download speed. If you need anything higher, then ADSL will be cheaper.

What iBurst needs to do in the future:
  • bring us speeds higher than 1mbps. I've heard from one of the iBurst techies that they are trialling 2mbps, using MIMO technology. Wonder how true this is, and if/when this will ever be launched. But still, 2mbps is not good enough. At least it'll be a start. But will we have to fork out another 2 grand for a new device/modem?
  • ensure that contention ratios are kept to respectable levels, especially now that their network will see increased usage because of the more affordable packages.
  • bring us true uncapped services, though the bolt-on value add uncapped service is a nice start.

It would be nice to get a comparison of total cost of ownership for ADSL vs iBurst, based on 3 cheapest ADSL ISPs, and using the cost/mbps/GB metric.

Any bored forumites wanna have a go at this? Any Staff Writers?

When I get up, I'll try to figure out why the subscription cost is not fixed for each bundle - is it because the speeds are different? Pricing is abit confusing.

Nope - the speeds are all the same. 1mbps.

They shoulda just kept it simple. A fixed monthly subscription fee of say R200-R300 (which compares favourably to Telkom's line rental + ADSL access fee), and per GB pricing of R39 (or less). This would work out more expensive for the lower-end 1GB and 2GB users. But I'm sure the majority of users will be exceeding 3GB, especially with the new pricing.

I wonder if unused data will still rollover to the next month? Hopefully Jannie will be able to answer all our questions in the (later) morning.

great work iburst!

i'm on the 239pm 1GB contract now, so if I'm reading correctly, this will now be R238pm for 2GB and uncapped 64kbps throttled afterwords?

Nice iBurst. This is what happens if someone with an understanding of customer's requirements and issues make it to the top

Hold the phone!! I don't see any reason to get overly enthused by iBurst's latest pricing moves. Considering that iBurst has absolutely no need for Telkom in the delivery of its service:

1) Why are they still charging per Gig when we've had 2 ISP's who've shown that it is possible to provide 100% uncapped ADSL from R399/month?
2) 64K...I'm about to drop a turd in my pants from non-excitement!
3) Am I the only one who thinks that iBurst is doing some fancy footwork with numbers while delivering sweet F-ALL in the face of market trends and solutions as currently offered by the likes of Chilli and Screamer? (hehehehe...chilli and screamer...sounds like one blerrie hot chilli :-) [I digress]

It make no sense to me that we're singing the praises of a company that has simply changed the flavour and colour of the lube while giving us different versions of the same thing. Like NeoSmell, why can't iBurst come out with some truly uncapped services instead of this hocus-pocus, number-shuffling balls!!

Lies, damn lies and statistics

Come on folks. 96% saving? Please... look again

64k uncapped. hahahhaahahaa

r we moving back to dialup soon?

Erm... I don't wanna sound negative or anything, but is this really an improvement? or is this more of a "bull**** baffles brains" scheme.

Whats up with this subscription fee? I don't understand it... essentially, for what I paying now, I get an extra gig, and am NO LONGER throttled when I reach my cap, which means, no internet... unless I top up.

I dunno...

For the people getting access to 8mb and 24mb DSL from iBurst (supposedly) soon, the new prices are a lot better. On the old prices you would have been able to blow a fortune very quickly if you had an 8mb line, never mind a 24mb.

I COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER MYSELF!!!

This is a total BS baffles Brains Scheme...
The only thing that attracted me to iBurst was the throttled service, now you wanna take that away by trying to impress me with another Gig?

Nah, iBurst, this is NOT AYOBA!

What happened to innovation? Are South African companies that incapable of bringing something new to the table.
Over the last few month I've seem some awesome ideas brought to the table here on MyBB, and by one or two other companies. :D
Trust me, if you took the plunge and marketed it well enough, you might even attract more subscribers. ;)

Like CritiKill said, stop number-shifting, and try implementing some new innovative ideas.

As noble as this may appear to be, this is de-facto admition of guilt and clever way to turn image of the day light robbery to consumer friendly pretending to be heroes.

I'm sorry but any company that can "slash" off 90-96% of their prices is admiting to have been ripping off consumers or will likely be bankrupt in a week.

..
not cule

Yep number shuffle thats all it is.
I used to just download what i needed (well as far as i got on my cap) and then just use the throttled 64k for basic needs.
Changing over to the new package i have to micro manage my download sizes with a dashboard that doesnt work 99% of the time otherwise i end up without internet.
I think ill just stay on my current package as it would work out more expensive to go for the new 5GB + 64k uncapped than what i am currently paying.

Current package 5GB + 64k uncapped

Old price ( R 599 )
New price ( R 592 + R199 )

EPIC FAILURE !!!

iBurst – which has around 80,000 broadband subscribers – announced today that it is increasing its data bundle sizes and significantly reducing its out-of-bundle and booster rates. Data bundles increase by between 50 to 100% while Top-Ups will drop by as much as 96%.

Looks like iburst actaully just became more expensive .
YOUR NUMBER SHUFFLE FAILS TO ACHIEVE ANYTHING.
All you did was make out of bundle cheaper at the cost of taking away the 64k throttled.
The whole reason iburst was appealing was the never get hard capped option.
Now you want to make that a payable feature , when that has always been part of iburst?

So in short this fails to impress me.
This helps me in no way at all. On the contrary i would be paying more than i am now for exactly the same product.
