For the record. The Netbook and old Laptop are in storage. FNB sent us 3 Samsung Mini's. And I won a Nexus 7 here a week after buying one for myself. But I don't have a windows tablet and Android can't run Office.
(Aw **** - I registered to test the new Office for Android last week.)

It's snappy and responsive. Didn't open a multitude of apps, but there's certainly no OS or single app lag.

Mostly older games, I could imagine something like Warcraft3 running very nicely on this. Also Half Life. KOTOR should also run quite nicely if you can get it running.
The kicker is storage.

Update: Terraria runs and seems smooth. I'm confused as to how you'd connect a mouse/keyboard to this thing? It has a micro USB at the top that any normal cellphone charger would have, nothing else...

Family member bought the 10.1" model... and there was a micro USB to female USB cable inside;



I suppose you could attach a USB hub perhaps and then the peripherals.

Not a very robust little connector... in awkward position on tablet... would probably work with a combo wireless mouse keyboard unified dongle thing... would recommend bluetooth input devices rather.

The 10.1" model came with a keyboard with a touchpad. I would have liked it to have had a USB connector on this base... would have made connecting devices and drives etc. a lot more convenient... but it is lacking one. The only USB port is the micro USB on the tablet itself and using the short cable leaves them dangling rather disturbingly off the side, needs an extension cable methinks. Perhaps designed for streaming and not USB hard drive access. 64GD SD cards push up the price a bit. It still performs very well and impressively so, no lag and very responsive.

Still perhaps worth contemplating paying the extra and getting something like the ASUS Transformer Book T100;

Just for the convenience of the extra 64GB storage, USB in the keyboard base and double the RAM.

Now just need to find a compatible screen protector for it for her...

16Gb internal storage ? That isn't even enough for a windows 8.1 install...

You'll be left with 512Mb for your excells and mp3 album . But i guess there is a stripped down version for these tables, but again they said it's the full win8.1 so confused there

looking at the info presented and some complaints about the Surface I actually think they are presenting 16 gigs after the OS install

On my Asus, Windows folder alone is 10GB, still need to add program files. You'll be using the micro SD or cloud storage for this one.

Windows 8.1 on these devices runs off a compressed image file on the recovery partition. Windows itself thus takes up only about 4-6GB of storage, which apps eat off another 2-3GB, depending on what bloat's been put on there. Anyone can actually do the same thing to their own system, provided they have an hour to waste with a Windows 8.1 ISO and a few deployment tools.

These things are basically designed to be the competitors to the Chromebook, but have full x86 Windows compatibility and will run almost any online service you can think of. And Office 365 offers unlimited online storage and will have support for media streaming later this year.

Nextbooks are also part of the "Windows Pure" line (I may be misremembering the slogan, but its close enough) which only has Windows and Office Home and Student installed as well as barebones utilities. Zero bloatware, in other words.

Bluetooth. Microsoft even launched a mouse and keyboard combo that uses Bluetooth for these kinds of devices about a month ago. There's a sweet portable version of the Lenovo Thinkpad keyboard available as well.
