Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

WA must be smirking at all this unhappiness in the ranks of those "Ship Jumpers";)

I sure hope you are wrong dude, for some reason i have faith in mweb and i won't abuse the line so let's hope the others do not follow in afrihosts path.

Mweb is a tier 1 isp and have their own network.

An example if an ISP who uses IS is Axxess. Axxess is reselling the IS 4 meg uncapped account and they said they are not limiting the amount you download, but the service is shaped 24/7.

Afrihost are doing their own network managment and don't seem to be reselling the IS 4 meg uncapped account like Axxess is. Anyone know if Afrihost is paying for speed or are they paying per gig? Paying per gig might explain why they have to throttle instead of shaping.

9:30 at night, averaging between 15-20 kb/s on a Steam update, on a 384 line. Not cool.

EDIT: Make that 10-15 kb/s now. This is not good enough!

Dude you have been warned, if you are willing to stick with them because you are loyal then you are the one losing out dude.

I have an Imagine account at the moment and I can guarantee you it's 100x worse.... torrents, news servers barely work (even at night). Http is either okay or non-existant. Steam doesn't work, gtalk bombs out..... blah ......

I think there's a general internet issue tonight - I've tried two of my prepaid accounts, and they're all slow.

BTW is it just me or is afrihosts client zone broken ??

128 k /s on 4bm lline on steam update as we speak (afrihost 10gig capped account)

We were but I honestly didn't think 384 users would be affected like this.

I'm not a heavy user at all, I'll never do more than 20GB a month. So all this soft capping/limiting/fair use policy stuff didn't bother me too much. But seriously my required 39kb/s that I want should really be a drop in the ocean of bandwidth traffic.

And no I dont want prepaid ADSL, I'm willing to pay a bit extra just so I don't have to think about being capped.

SORT IT OUT AFRIHOST!

Well, you have 1/10 of the speed of the 4Mb account, so look at Gian's post and divide all the thresholds and speeds by 10. On the other hand, you are paying 40% of the 4Mb account, so you may be lucky and the thresholds will only be divided by 2.5 instead.

Yeah, dialup is great ;)

Thanks for that Gian.

I have a question.

I'm currently on the 384 uncapped (R197pm) package, so technically I'll never be able to do 120GB per month, 120GB threshold being when 4mb user are throttled down to 384, right? Why then do I not get my full line speed EVER? As it is I'm getting 25kb/s MAX through anything (Speedtest.net, ftp downloads, torrents, video streaming). Before I got uncapped I was getting 39kb/s consistantly.

I hope you can clear this up for me, thanks.

I can't answer for Gian of course, but if 4Mb speed are being throttled at 30 GB, I imagine 384 should be throttled to 256, 128, 64 once you reach 5GB, 10GB and 15GB. I should think that would be about fair if you compare it to 4Mb.

That would curb the 384 "power users".
:D

killa - i didn't realise you didn't know mweb has their own network. i saw you mention IS with respect to them a couple of times but thought you meant that general internet infrastructure was affected.

mweb is tier-1. hence why i have thrown my money at them. they knew what they were doing. Or at least they have a better idea of what they are doing as opposed to the ISPs that have reacted to the news that has rocked the internet world in SA.

I'm against the line speed limiting.. I'm paying Telkom for my line not Afrihost? An i'm paying for the 4096 uncapped not the 512k or the 128k uncapped.... I feel this is doing users in..

I do how ever agree with port shaping, by all means shaped some ports 24/7 but I cant handle youtube, southpark and my series to buffer every 5 sec because I've now got a "128" line?!
I think if you want to deal with power users.. (which I have done 60+ gigs in the last quarter of march) limit torrents to say 50 -70 kbps since this is what I would consider uses the majority of the bandwidth (my case anyways)

Did I miss something amongst the posts. Its the 1st of the new month and speeds are worse than ever? surely the new month has kicked in and caps have been reset or is this an Afrihost april fools joke? am getting 6.7K downloads on my 4mb line ...

I am totally capped by afrihost!

I have a prepaid with 140MB which can't authenticate

I have a 5GB subscription which is listed as capped

I upgraded to uncapped at 06:30 this morning and my uncapped is capped.

The invoice for the upgrade arrive within minutes.

I called the helpdesk and nobody is on duty. How in the basics of a service business paradign can a professional organisation make major changes and not have a a team on standby?

Gian,

WTF is going on?
