I'm wondering if I should buy "The Jesus Modem" and attach the W8980 to it as a router to see how it behaves.

I tried "The Jesus Modem" and it was a bit too unreliable for my liking. Maybe it was a bad modem that I got, but from my side I wouldn't recommend it. I even tried reinstalling the latest firmware on it, but nothing helped.

One thing I did discover by purchasing it is that D-Link's local support is really good! You can phone them up and someone will help you.

Had 3 of em, solid as a rock after you get the configuration done. All died to lightning hitting the Telkom line.

I personally use an Asus N66u as my main router and it has been great. A bit steep price-wise, but with custom Merlin firmware a real wireless N beast in terms of speed and coverage for my family's usage patterns. Just browse to smallnetbuilder website and they have great modem + router rankings and comprehensive reviews and comparos(although some models no not apply here in SA)

HTTP, NNTP and PSN downloads are still ridiculously slow for me at the moment. Yes, I've tried rebooting the router.

I don't recommend moving a line. This is the reason:
Dealing with Telkom support is very trying. It can ages just to reach them and support tickets are often mishandled - maybe even summarily closed. If we delegate that rough job to a company, they just don't have the time or inclination to follow up or follow through with the deadbeats at telkom. So your best line manager is yourself via telkom.

An ISP has elevated access to Telkom and do stuff like test lines, instantly upgrade lines, profile lines, reset ports, etc. You have it very wrong.

Don't even bother with AG. Its quite evident from his posts on many other threads that he is one seriously misinformed individual.

Was even pwned by CW on another thread

I had my eye on that router and also the TP-Link D9. Both of these routers use technology to "beam" the wifi signal to the various devices.

Archer D9's Beamforming technology - locate your connected devices and boost wireless signal strength in those directions, delivering a more targeted and highly efficient wireless connection.

Think of the economics of it, manhours. You seem not to have any formal qualifications so perhaps this is new to you.

The average joe spends a long time trying to get a fault sorted out. An ISP (a proper ISP I mean) may have a more direct route, but you cannot completely avoid the incompetence in our parastatal. So if telkom just closes a fault, who is going to notice? So now you have to spend time checking that the problems are still open.

Frequently things are marked as resolved when they aren't. So what now? I had a problem recently that was closed three times, with the second time saying all was fine. Only when I escalated it again they said it was the underground cables and they finally fixed that. Of course the problem is not full resolved and may never be. If this company is still using Cybersmart, they will know that the money allocated to support is very small and not worth the trouble for pseudo-ISPs.

Quick question for CW.

When you were offering promo capped prices to existing customers, I remember it being around R2 a gig (I stand under correction).

You've now released pricing on your site for R1.70, so what gives?

In addition, will you only offer tier 1 capped data?

total logic fail, you're so wrong once again, keep trying though, you may yet get a flash of brilliance

No, keep it and manage it yourself. A small ISP will not have the time to manage it in the same way and with the same dedication.

oh, I see, it's a stuck record, has nothing significant to do other than make troll posts

What is the current status of CW accounts? Are fixes still pending?

I've been getting half my line speed on downloads since I got back home a few days ago.
