After Hours Unshaped

"Don't worry about your downloads being shaped. Just let them fire off after hours and wake up to a completed queue each day."

Taken directly from your website.. "dont worry about your downloads being shaped" Thats pretty much my biggest worry as they shaped to the ground under.. Rather changing your wording before the CPA comes running after you

you are misunderstanding what shaping is: as briefly stated in my previous post (and covered a few times on MyBB by various people) shaping is a direction in managing a network - think robots, yield signs and stop streets. The term shaping is used to enable higher contention to apply (more customers on a smaller pipe) whereas similar network management techniques to enable VoIP etc ... are QoS. At midnight the shaping mechanisms are turned off.

Now when there is a problem on a highway traffic cops come and "shape" the traffic.

As for the CPA. I am absolutely confident that Crystal Web is fully compliant with both the letter and the spirit of the Consumer Protection Act. Our Customer Relationship Agreement is IMHO a benchmark for best practice and considerable effort to afford the customer a great relationship - providing exceptional allowance for dispute resolution and engagement. If you sincerely believe there is a CPA violation or have a dispute please email [email protected]

Hi Paul,

What do you mean about capped accounts being in a different pipe to other accounts?

What effect does this have on torrents during business hours or before 12am?

The home capped accounts work a little differently. These are accounts that have a shaper which can turn on when network demand requires (and applies incrementally). On these particular accounts it really makes sense to do torrents between 00h00 and 06h00 because you have more data allocated for use.

So if I have a torrent that say I want to download around 7PM chances are I'm going to be shaped?

I have no problem downloading torrents after 12 and like you say it makes sense with the extra cap but sometimes there are things that can't wait for 12am.

not everyday - although more often than we'd like. This is why we are looking very closely at the opportunity which Telkom's recent moves on IPC afford us

lets get one thing straight here.. as far as i understood, downloads from 12am to 6am (downloading period) do not count to your star rating.. Most my usage would go through in this period because of the larger downloads.. So how can u make an assumption of 180gig not taking this into account? Honestly...

So then how can crystal web make assumptions my usage is high.. when most is done during that download period.. Honestly im over battling with an ISP who clearly gives no dam.. who have hardly made even the slightest of effort to sort my query.. leaving me heavily frustrated and totally going against what their product offers.. I dont even think they understand what they doing themselves. Im sending my cancellation email now, good riddance.. good luck to everyone else signing up.. not for me thankyou very much.. worst and most dissapointing experience ive had since getting ADSL back in the day when it was first introduced in SA

Same. :)

HD Netflix streaming is fabulous. I schedule all my NNTP downloads from midnight to 6am. SABNZBD stats show they always run at full line speed.

Well, goodbye then...don't let the door hit you on the way out!

Been a customer since month 1 and this has literally been the best ISP I have ever used. As pointed out to you, your usage does not match your account type. As you can also see, the CEO's are on the case with regards to the minor issues you have experienced. But, you are more than welcome to go experience worse elsewhere :)

Steven thats good for you, unfortunately my experience hasnt been the same.. the poor service i have received to solve my query together with the numerous promises to get back to me with a solution is testament to the poor performance i have received on the account itself. If you take out the usage between the download periods, they would notice that my on peak usage is very small. You should never add this usage from 12am-6am as being the reason for high usage. Anyways doesn't matter anymore

This sounds like the IS shaper at work (that star thing) - when I was still on plugg I found that even the slightest deviation from the defined "off peak" (00h01 - 05h59) would kill the 'stars' - after months fighting plugg I couldn't handle it anymore and moved - if this is what's happened to you I understand your frustration completely.

Hi AfricanTech,

In my response to converse, I did state that our management team are working to address certain performance discrepancies on Home Basic Uncapped Accounts. However these issues have certainly not affected this user as he is simply on the wrong account for his needs, It's as simple as that and unfortunately there is not much we can do about this unless the Client is willing to co-operate with us to find the correct account for their specific needs.

Regards,
Steph
Crystal Web Team

I've barely been with them for a month African tech.. and even from the start i was already querying this as even when i was on 5star for the first 1-2 weeks, my speeds were still dismal.. so i don't know what it is.. but for heavens sakes, between 12am-6am at least give me a bit of room to download..

Stephen if thats the case, then explain why i had this issue from day one.. When i was a new client on 5 star rating.. and everytime the clock hit 12:00am my downloads never ever really got going? if im lucky the best i ever saw was 100kb/s, that was even in the first week.. So how can you tell me the account is not right for my usage, because in the first week there was no way you could tell what my usage would be like. Secondly as i've discussed.. My usage during day time has not been much, only in the last week ive slipped in a download or 2 as nothing ever got done between 12-6am, but other than that i always scheduled any heavy downloads for the 12:00am period.. so i don't buy that sorry.
