If your using unofficial roms essentially you are accepting that there may be problems, they are after all custom and modified to add additional functions that may or may not work perfectly in all conditions. That's something you should rite fully understand before going the custom route, your essentially complaining about your own choices that you willing made of sound mind and body without any external coercion.
I installed about 15 custom roms on my nexus s and about 12 of them were terrible, but that was my choice and any problems are not the fault of my handsets manufacturer nor that of the official software developers or vendors and were essentially the responsibility of a team of guys/girls who probably do not get paid for the custom development in order to give us additional features that are intended to enhance the experience of the device. Tee fact that its unofficial and custom inherently are a warning that bugs may exist, actually its quite likely. This is not to say that official releases are flawless, but under those conditions your points are valid, yet however developers can also not test under all possible scenarios and with every possible of 3rd party application that also may or may not have an effect over the overall experience.
As for the serious drop in battery life, that is not true, it was designed with yes many more features, but also many more enhancements and at the very worst its battery life is equal to that of its predecessors, but in most cases is actually better, myself any many other noticed extensions in battery life as reported here on MyBB and XDA after upgrading to ICS on a number of different handsets, on my nexus s the battery life was almost doubled after the upgrade, my note I cannot testify too as it was upgraded less than 12 hours after I got it.
