Official Tri-Nations 2010 Thread

Was a painful result. I missed the game, but when someone told me the score, I was like "AAAAARGH!". I thought we proved we're the best.

I think part of the problem was the press got high on their own supply. They looked back at last year, saw 5 wins out of 6, and assume we must have demolished everything in our wake. The truth is we had some very hard fought wins against New Zealand which could have gone either way. We forget that the all blacks were in some turmoil at the time, and were far from their best. We on the other hand were playing with Du Preez, Francious Steyn, Brussouw, Juan Smith, and Jpp who were all vitally important to the kick/chase game we were playing. Sure it was successful, but then then again how successful was it really when perfect execution only resulted in a few marginal wins.

This time around we don't have those players, New Zealand is stronger, the rules have greatly changed the mechanics of the fetching role, we don't have the benefit of a tough Lions tour to iron out the kinks, Januarie is playing instead of one of the world greatest players, and we start the trinations in the unfriendly waters of eden park (NZ).

Sure we could still win a few games over there, but i don't think its healthy to assume it'll be easy.

Fourie du Preez is our general and primary playmaker, and without him we lose atleast 50% of our effectiveness as an attacking team. This under a new dispensation of rules which clearly ups the importance of tries in the eventual outcome of the game. The most concerning aspect of the loss was the fact that we failed to score 1 try while they managed to score 4. Even if we defend well i don't think we should bank on them scoring anything less than 2. Its also worth noting that this year they have placed huge emphasis on reducing the penalty count to nullify the role of steyn racking up the points.

I'm not being negative, but rather saying we need to be smarter.

Agreed. But why on earth would the coach pick Januarie ahead of at least 9 scrumhalves in the country that are far better. Our back line are getting the ball from the ruck far too late and that means we are already on the back foot.

There is obviously the quota aspect, but i suspect January off the field and in the changing rooms appears allot more competent, and probably offers a far amount of historical knowledge because he has been in the "system" so long. If the new guy appears nervous and unsure, a pressurized coach will more often than not go with the cool headed (been there/done than) older guy.

The perfect example of this is Ashwin Willemse. In his later years he didn't really offer that much on the field, but as we can see from his new supersport pre-game commentary job, he is quite personable and intelligent. Its very easy to put your trust in someone like that.

The main issue with our current game plan is its reliance on previous strengths which the current crop simple don't posses. Thats not saying we can't do well, but the coaching staff is going to have to build some try scoring attacking potential into the team because you need atleast 2 tries to be in reasonable contention unless the penalties flow.

The whole damn team sucked and yes, the ABs were determined that yesterday, they would win. The 10 minutes Bakkies was off cost us dearly, in points and momentum.

I am delighted this has happened now though. Gives grounds for a regroup and a rethink. RP would have played at least as badly as January. Chances are good he would have been better - and if even slightly better, he should get the chance to show himself. I am no fan of his, but I do think he could have had a better game than January.

Zane - among others - kicked away possession too many times. But he was not the only culprit.

Spies was almost invisible.

Lineouts sucked.

I think Gurthro had a good game in his own capacity. Why did Smit leave early?

Oh, and M_H - you are forgiven for adding your 2 cents worth at 23h30 or whatever it was. However, I do think at R0.02 you may have just over-valued that opinion.

I'm glad the Boks are being shown the other side of the game for a change. It can only be good to bring them down to earth again before the WC next year.

That being said, Bakkies and Butch should be kicked out of the team never to play for the Boks again. I have seen Bakkies been on the receiving end of bad calls time after time but the last few games he has gone out of his way to be sent off. This is not what a profesional player does, and I see this as him having alterior motives whatever that might be.

Bring Francois Steyn and Andries Bekker......

Is there a big difference playing no 4 or no 5 lock? I would imagine the main difference is where the respective locks jump and stand in the line out and at scrum time but Andries along side Victor could work quiet nicely.

There is no difference in the way they scrum. The line-outs they can practice. But I say drop Bakkies now and make Andries a #4 Lock ;)

Beating them 4 times in a row is a bit much to ask. :)

Does look like NZ are going to peak a year before the WC as per usual.

They had a good game for sure, but I won't say they peaked. SA had a crap game, sure we where out played but we just had no focus or direction. We actually looked like lambs in queue at the slaughter house tbh :o

Yep, I could see on Richie M's face in the first 5 minutes that NZ were going to win it.
It's an away game anyway, looking forward to see how we do against the Aussies this year, they will also be tough.

How can bakkies get a 9 week ban WTF, he should have got atleast a year

Nea. I think 9 weeks is harsh. It was just a headbutt. However, I feel Bakkies should be kicked from the Springbok squad. He has now let the Boks down too many time.
