Oneplus 5

Okay thanks, will get the one from oneplus. Last questions as a noob ordering a phone from overseas, how does one pay customs? Does DHL charge you the amount when it arrives at your doorstep? Previous packages that I collected at sapo I paid for customs when collecting the package, but not sure how it works with a courier.

DHL should usually contact you a day or 2 before delivery to arrange payment of the import duties. I think you can do it online with a credit card if I remember correctly

Correct (their online payment page rendered terribly in Chrome on my Nexus 5, use a desktop to save yourself some major frustration)

Was away for a while, so here's my updates finally.

Day 5: Package in Hong Kong.
Day 6: UAE
Day 7: South Africa, incl customs.
Day 8: delivered at home (Cape Town)
...
Day 11: back at home to finally get my hands on it!!!

Congrats. I may go the same route as you. Do you know if they sell any genuine accessories as I would like to get the original flip case as I have one on my OP3 and it is amazing? I would prefer to get everything in one package rather than separately.

Don't think they sell it separately, but you'd need to check the seller's store. The covers are usually bundled with the phone (look at the different options under bundle/colour). When I ordered my 6GB the options included original cases, but for the 8GB only generic cases were available. At the moment they have a MOFI flip case as an option.

Very satisfied with the ordering process. Would have been even faster if not for the seller's (PopHong) initial 2 day delay.

Worked out to just over R8,000 in total. R7500 ($546) for the 6GB version plus original Sandstone cover and 2.5D tempered glass protector (ordered when the Rand was about 13.50). Customs was R500. Seller also included a cheap silicone skin and a USB type A to C convertor. OnePlus include a film protector fitted to the phone as well as what appears to be a 2D tempered glass protector in the box.

I'm still busy setting up the phone and copying over apps, etc. Initial impressions are very good. It's super fast and I haven't had any jelly scrolling or other issues. Loving the fingerprint sensor.

Cover looks great

Why does it matter if the photos are used by bots? You won't have to deal with ads, which are the only unpleasant aspect of the equation.

I peeled my screen protector off because it had lifted ever so slightly at one point along the top. It's just cheap plastic. The screen looks and feels nicer without it, so I'm glad I didn't wait years to do it. Gorilla Glass 5 won't scratch until a 6 on the Moh scale, which is pretty hardcore. No random object will be a problem.

It looks alright, but the protective cases from OnePlus are so amazing you really should aim for those. Just order directly from oneplus.net and use a mail forwarding service to get to SA. I have the Karbon case and it's as perfect as a case can be. High quality, very thin (flush with camera lenses), doesn't extend width or height of phone, microfibre interior and looks really great.

I just peeled the plastic protector off on your recommendation and i can already can feel a difference with the responsiveness to touch.

Yeah the display coating is great and worth interacting with directly. It's also not a mega dust magnet like the default screen protector is.

Got this message from PongHong today:

Your package hand it over to DHL at last friday ,
But informed that your address and zip code 7405 provided is remote area ,
Which need to pay extra fee US $38 .

How is Pinelands, Cape Town remote? I told them that I already paid $29 in shipping costs, so they need to make a plan.

Very strange, I had two deliveries from them to pinelands and no issues. Oneplus 3T around Feb and more recently the 5 for my brother.

Got a update from PongHong:

"Yes , i know , we sent package to Cape Town before , not remote area
But DHL system and dhl service update , it's remote area now .
If you don't want to pay that , give me a new address , just make sure not a remote area please"

I gave them my home address in Bellville, not sure what a difference that will make. Definitely not paying a extra $40 for shipping.

Just a update, he was fine with my address in Bellville.

No idea how that is not remote and Pinelands is.

I think he might have been trying to take a chance to score some extra moola.

Got mine over the weekend and absolutely lovely phone. With the speed this thing recharges I hope the battery will last!!!

My battery life has been exceptional. At least as good as my old OnePlus One and my OP5 isn't even rooted and running any trickery.

Might interest you to know that not ever charging the battery to 100% and not ever letting it get below 20-40% can more than double the lifespan of the battery. The optimal max percentage is supposedly 80% but I can't deal with that, so I just stop somewhere in the 90's.

Also, a future OP5 firmware update is supposed to include Energy Aware Scheduling. It will be the first device to have it, and apparently it very drastically improves battery life. OnePlus devs have been claiming a 100% improvement behind the scenes, but that seems more than a little optimistic.
