Online piracy is driven by greed

Ja right . . . This looks like some cooked up attempt to ease someone’s conscious. I am a big downloader myself but at least I am honest enough to admit what I am doing. The bottom line is that downloading something (anything) without paying therefore is tantamount to stealing. All these stupid arguments based on freedom of information and consumers being ripped off by greedy corporates are rubbish. Stealing is stealing no matter how you try and disguise it.
The thing is that the internet has made it really easy to safely steal digital content. I don’t think this will change any time soon either. That is the only reason why the content creators have been forced to look at other distribution models like the all-you-can-eat streaming subscriptions mentioned in a previous post. Do they want to change the way they distribute their material? No they don’t. Do they think they will make more money this way? No they don’t. They are simply doing it to counter the illegal downloading of their material. They simply hope that if they present the average content downloader with a relatively cheap and easy way to get the content legally, most of them will go for it to ease their consciousness.

You are talking complete and utter rubbish. Please become informed on the issues before spewing this nonsense over the forums.

PS. And it's "conscience".

PPS. Do you work for the BSA by any chance?

This may sound alarming, but in reality it is great news.
What will happen when the US starts seizing domain names? People will stop registering domain names with US registrars and that is a Good Thing!

What will happen if the US decides to try and seize internationally registered domain names?
We can start getting away from DNS that is controlled by a handful of people and start using a distributed internet naming system. This is a Very Good Thing.

What will happen if the US starts to force search engines to sensor their listings?
This creates the oppertunity for rival search engines to emerge overseas and bring well needed competition. This is a Good Thing.

What will happen if the US starts to disconnect IPs connected to torrents?
US people will start to buy VPN connections overseas. Not such a good thing, but this will hurt the US economy a lot more than simply letting file sharers be.

Because the internet is a global phenomenon, the moment the US starts to regulate their little portion of it they start to become a very weak and untrusted player in the internet arena, and ensuring no country has too much control over the internet is an Extremely Good Thing.

"The Internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it." -- John Gilmore

I agree 100%. Post Of The Day :D

What this law clearly shows is that American legislators don't have the faintest idea about how the internet works.

The problem is the pricing and distribution. Its that simple. Until they make it affordable and easily accessible... Ill continue to pirate. Stuff that is online for us to watch and pay for (like Hulu.com and Google video rentals)... we cant get because it says "only available in the USA". So fk you until you remember that the world is made up of more than the USA. When I get get those products online at a reasonable price and theyre available to me. Ill happily pay. Until then... Ill happily pirate.

Once you start posting PS comments like this you lose all credibility. You have now gone and turned a nice little debate into something personal. Completely unnecessary . . .

Er, "Case IN point".

Thanks RoganDawes

I don't mind to be corrected, I know I'm bad in languages and the only way for me to learn is with practice and people that correct me in good fashion like you did, so please Nazi away!

No its not theft. It doesnt fit any definition of the word theft unless you are dishonest and change the meaning. Or if we are going to change the meaning of words to suite our arguments... I can play that game. Not pirating is rape. Rape is rape no matter how you try disguise it. (this is a fun game).

In criminal law, theft is the illegal taking of another person's property without that person's freely-given consent (Wikipedia)

The thing is that they are expecting to make money of it. For example some guy from BMI argued that if you upload your own legal music to an online personal music locker and listen to it over the internet it should be classified as a public performance and that you/music locker company should pay for it. wtf? These guys want you to pay for the same song on your ipod, your home theatre system, the internet and whatever else they can think off and on their terms too. If they could get it to expire and get you to pay for it again why not? I am sorry, when I pay for something it is mine, and I dont want to be inconvenienced in the process either. I had to deal with sony's rootkit before, songs that couldnt play on linux because it was drm'd. These guys need to catch a wake up. I think they are the root cause of all this pirating.

I didnt take it. I copied it. The owner still has the original. Hence the reason why copyright infringement is not criminal law, but civil. (common sense)

If I see a car on the side of the street, and I make a copy of the car with a replicator and drive off in the copy leaving the original car behind... did I steal the car? Think hard about this.

What about the part of the owners "freely given consent"? Not only are the owners of the tracks and movies you are downloading not giving you their consent they are actively pleading with you not to copy/download them!

If you see a car on the street with the owner standing next to it asking you not to copy his car and you still proceed to copy the car . . . yes that would be theft!

No its not :D As much as you want it to be... its not.

I would like to see a system where you pay as much as you think a TV episode / movie / song is worth. Iow if you like it a lot you pay more. If you think a song is mediocre or a singing Greys Anatomy episode sucked you pay nothing or less. This would then serve as a rating system for content providers which would enable them to know what people are willing to pay for and what not.
Ah yes, what a wonderful system that would be!

Of course your employer would immediately buy into that system and apply it to you. "Mmm. I took a look at your work today, and you know, it sucked. Did nothing for me. Pay, you say? You want ME to pay YOU for that sucky work?!! On your bike, mate!".

That's just the kind of incentive creative people need! Why didn't anyone think of that before??

W1z4rd debating with AJB is the same as you pi55ing in the wind (in AJB case it's a storm).

I suppose one can still argue that it's a theft or right. ie: While you haven't stolen ana ctual CD from the shop, you still have stolen the opportunity to do so. If you weren't going to pay for it anyway, nothing was lost, nobody has lost a profit, the original CD is still there - I think this boils down to an ethics question.

I suppose it's like sneaking into a movie theater that has free seats available. You haven't paid, you haven't taken someone's seat and have not cost the owner of the theater money.

(I think this scenario would be an interesting topic on PD actually) :)

Well if we are debating morality.... and not meanings of words then thats easier. Who is more important to you? South Africa or the USA? If the answer is SA... then every time you pirate you help SA and its trade deficit :D
