This is the trick.

We shape Windows updates, folks are unhappy. We leave them, it floods the network.

We are trying to find a balance with this problem.

MrBEEP, is it possible, or even legal, for ISP's to cache data on a network?

I know with UUNET back in circa '96 - '97 (14400 baud dial-up days) they had a caching server......not too sure about now days though.

did about 60 odd mb's past 12 this morning. chop chop! i did stop my normal activities though.

i had to stop my 10KB/s download in order to load this website, else it times out :)

I just bought 10GB from Afrihost so I can actually get some work done today... This nonsense had better be sorted out before the 10GB runs out, else I'm outta here for good.

Guys this newer implemented shaping (Restricting better word) start asking for reduction in Monthly cost as if we take an average of 23 days at 8 hours a day reduced speed you would be basically lose around 7 days of full speed Internet.

I also think it's time we by law know our contention ratio this would go along way in self regulating the entire ISP setup
minim and maximum limits could be laid out by law. Any discrepancies would mean massive fines or licence suspension.

I believe the blame should be Telkom's. We are charged ridiculous amounts of money for their IPC Wholesale product, and still have to compete directly with them in the retail market.

Fact is, consumers demand cheaper products, and the only way to offer these are to increase contention ratios, thereby increasing shaping.

The more you pay the more you get. Unfortunately, unless Telkom drops their Wholesale pricing anytime soon, the next consumer price drop will only be to the detriment of the consumer, as contentions cannot be increased any further without someone paying.

This is not an OpenWeb problem, it is a National problem affecting all the ISP's.

Windows updates are still the cause i'm afraid.

We cannot control Windows Updates any further as this will simply delay the problem. We need them to all clear.

0kbps on NNTP during the day :D, nice. Gamers king account.

Hi Aquadyne

Was your problem resolved?

Yes it has, but in the sense that was expected to be after 17h00 as is normally the case.
My problem was overall throughputs during business hours on normal browsing and emails.
Nobody called me back or spoke with me after reporting it, though. It just kinda is what it is.

I understood your comments though re the Windows Updates, but as some have commented - other ISP's are not as critically affected during these occurances.

I am content now though, thanks for enquiring Mr Beep. :)
